Was hunting the last day of the 2017 deer season. Was a shitty year, so I said a prayer to the Saint of hunters to help me out. He sent me a dog. Treed me in the stand, fell asleep at the base of the stand, then followed me to my truck after. No collar or any other identifiers so he became mine and named him Saint. Best dog I’ve ever owned.

I went to school with a local breeder’s kids. A family they had sold a puppy to was looking to rehome the dog because it played too rough with their small children. The breeder’s daughter knew I had been looking for a dog to adopt recently and referred me to the family.

The dog bonded to me immediately, and has been a great pet. He’s also been very gentle with the little children he’s been introduced to.

One of my friends gave her to me. Lab. He owned the stud so he got pick of the litter. I owe him a puppy whenever I breed her.

Find a breeder where the parents are show dogs and you get to see/meet the parents. Also, all puppies are chipped. An example below:

BonBon

My son did this when looking for a Toy Aussie and he bought 2 female puppies from the same parents who are show dogs. The breeder is Flaming Dill Ranch in Texas.

Co-worker walking down the hall with a red heeler puppy in her arms, and I asked where did you get her? Abandoned on the road with her dog bed and some food. I took her and brought her home. She is a hell of a pup.

Petfinder.com search led to a rescue about 40 minutes away. They had a Carolina Dog driven up from a shelter in South Carolina. Of course they sold her to us as a yellow lab. Great dog for our family.

Ours was rescued from a trashy woman who didn't get a major injury treated and it healed up wrong. Dog has a permanent limp now. Woman's boyfriend was threatening to shoot the dog so we took it. Border collie. Good boy.

Rescue mix Husky/GSD from a nearby shelter. One of my son’s went to visit and brought him back. He said he was the most chill dog of the handful he evaluated. And….we hit the jackpot on manners and attitude. He doesn’t bark nor get excited when someone comes to the door and he doesn’t jump on people. He is not a licker either.

Not sure what type you’re looking for. I have labs and they are house pets, but they’re first and foremost trained duck dogs. When I purchased them / started looking for a litter. I looked at pedigree, parents titles, reputation of the breed ect.
If you are looking for a speciality dog, reputation of the breeder, pedigree and health certificates are the most important. And stay away from puppy mills.

One wandering our neighborhood, one wandering down a 4 lane freeway, and the other adopted from NextDoor app. When I wanted a specific breed, did internet searching and some additional research on ones that were closer by and looked promising.

Most recent two came from a breeder in Sulphur. The one before that was the daughter of our champion male. He came from a breeder in NC. The one before that was the daughter of our original dog, who came from a guy in Bienville Parish.

My brother in law got a puppy for the kids, kids didn’t want puppy so he was in a kennel all the time. I’ve had dachshunds off and on for years so he asked if we wanted him.

We’ve had him for a couple of years now and he is much happier having free run of the house. Not the best dachshund I’ve ever had but he’s a good dog.

quote:

How did you find your dog?

word of mouth to find a breeder. There are a lot of scams online for dog breeders, and a lot of the breeders you find online will be outrageously more expensive. We got rather lucky with both of our golden retrievers. Our first was bought from a small country breeder in rural Georgia somewhat near Augusta (I lived in Atlanta at the time). Bought her for $750, and she's the best dog I've ever had. Our second was from a litter from my wife's friend's dogs. She and her husband both had goldens. We got him for just $500, so basically the cost to take care of him the first 8 weeks. Goldens usually run, at minimum, $1500 from most breeders that I've seen.

Shelter. We let our young kids pick them with some heavy-handed advice.

Then we stick to the concept that it's their dog and their responsibility to look after her. But everybody knows that she's my 80 lb lapdog.

Daughter in law’s mother noticed her hanging around her rural property. She’d probably been on her own awhile, based on how skittish she was. She had heart worms, as well as a few other issues. She is a beautiful Great Pyrenees and as sweet as can be. Still shy, but a wonderful dog.

A local dog rescue was having an adoption event at Jefferson Feed. My daughter zeroed in on one particular dog, and instantly fell in love. We adopted her a few days later.

I prefer to go through rescues rather than the local pound. Most rescue dogs are housed with a foster family, so you can talk to the foster about the dog's disposition.

Lady had a bunch of shih tzu puppies she didn’t want to keep. She gave me Oscar for free. Already potty trained and had his shots.

Some idiot left him at a Walmart - just leashed to a trash can. Some nice lady took him to the vet and had him vaccinated, microchipped, and "fixed" - all at her cost. We adopted him. He had a huge schlong, so I named him Wanker.
