How bad are these Bronco Sports with the 3 cylinder engines?

Is there any reason to even consider buying one of these? For a younger driver, is what I'm thinking.
I mean, they look nice, but three cylinders?
Can anyone sell me on these things?

They are very cute, that's all that matters.

Would be a nice gift for your husband.

I don't know if the car would be underpowered (they make some four bangers that will absolutely haul arse) but an underpowered car is dangerous.

A 3 cyl engine shouldn’t ever be in a car much less an suv.

They cost too damn much for what they are.

Look nice
But I rented one this weekend, not a fan of the drive. Riding in the backseat was terrible.

We bought my mom one and after she passed gave it to my niece. I loved that little thing and it ran great with no issues. Of course every new vehicle should run great for 40K miles but they had no issues out of it and it was pretty good on gas.

We sell lots of 3cyl car/suv/crossovers, Chevy Trax & Trailblazer have plenty of power for interstate hwy driving.
Now, if off-road or trailering is your thing, I’d look at another vehicle…

I see three immediate drawbacks:
1. Ford manufactured them.
2. They still haven't gotten the little turbo eco-boost engines right. Google for reviews. You'll find plenty of problems.
3. It's still new in this platform. If you insist on buying one, at least wait a few years to the vehicle will be less crappy.
Unsolicited advice: Just buy a RAV-4 or CRV, even the little Mazda MXs are way better than Ford garbage.

It's a turbo

The 2021–2025 Ford Bronco Sport features a standard 1.5L EcoBoost 3-cylinder turbocharged engine on Big Bend, Heritage, and Outer Banks trims, producing 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque.
In comparison, Chevy Camaro from the late 80's:

the V6 2.8 (173) running 135 HP at 4,900 rpm and 160 lb.ft at 3,900 rpm, the 5.0L 305 cid V8 gained throttle body injection, bringing net horsepower to 170

The Bronco and Bronco sport are ugly in general. Nevermind the engine
There's a dude that drives this one around LC with one of these on his and thinks he is big pimpin

I’ve had mine for 5 years as my daily commuter. No crazy issues out of it yet, I’ve got about 80k miles on it. Definitely not much power under the hood and the back seats can get tight, but it’s been fine for what I use it for

A CX-5 is a better choice in that price range.

That can be said about almost any new car these days.

The past 3cyl Ford EcoBoom is a disaster waiting to happen. It's a shining example of letting accountants have a say in vehicle design.

A ford Fiesta powered Bronco.... what could go wrong?
Posted on 5/5/26 at 12:45 pm to Y.A. Tittle
Just buy a CX-5 and move on
Or a Honda HRV/Subaru Crosstrek if you don’t need something quite that big
