Hot Take: I-49 would be much better served by running Shreveport to Baton Rouge.

It could cross the river through South Baton Rouge ending into Nicholson where it'd just cross mostly cow fields once past East bank. I think it'd be too much to try to bring it past Nicholson into I-10 with Highland/Perkins and many neighborhoods in that path. That'd create a Southern bridge across the river, or just merge it into I-10 around the 415/Port Allen exit on I-10.
Almost all traffic coming from Dallas/East Texas and Shreveport going down I-49 has a final destination that is either Baton Rouge, New Orleans, or the beach from Gulf Shorts to Destin. Not many are headed to Lafayette. Can't tell you how much time that'd have saved me. You could make that in 3 hours Shreveport to BR straight interstate.
I just think as is Shreveport to Lafayette gets a lot less usage than if it had gone Shreveport to Baton Rouge like railroads and LA hwy 1 did/do.
I don't see the need to build I-49 running from Laffayette through Morgan City in US 90's current route to New Orleans. I-10 already accomplishes this. Hwy 90 also already accomplishes this.

Moving the state capital from BR to Laffy would fix everything as well. Nobody goes to Baton rouge for the same reasons that they go to new Orleans or the coast.

Just move the capital to pecan island. Thats gonna be the economic driver of this whole state.

Not I-49 related but it's really dumb now for I-10 to go south into New Orleans just to go back up and rejoin it's original east-west routing at Baton Rouge.
Just have I-10 take the current route that I-12 has and bypass New Orleans. You could easily extend I-59 through New Orleans to take the current I-10 route.
There's already plenty of examples of this. I-95 goes around D.C. and Boston. I-5 bypasses San Francisco. I-75 goes around Knoxville and bypasses Tampa. This way the I-12 designation could be reallocated for future use anywhere in the U.S.

Just extend I-12 to Shreveport..twin-sign 10/12 across the Mississipi River and have 12 branch out again shortly thereafter.

That would be dumb since Laffy will be the biggest city in Louisiana after space port built. Just elevate the run over historic “hood”

"Hey! Those are historic neighborhoods you're talking about!"
You cant just bulldoze our used-to-be Burger King that is now a weave and nail shop

Not sure that BR needs another major corridor running through it.

Yes, but I-10 has to go through the Baton Rouge bottleneck. An alternative to avoid that is desirable.

If it's out of town folks passing through, run it to I 12. That's the pass through coast to coast.
Also, loop will never happen within sight of BR.

Just re-route I-12 as an elevated expressway up north at Airline Hwy up to the new MS river bridge in St. Francisville then have it follow LA 1 up toward A-town

Kind of late now. I-49 already goes to Lafayette. Your idea would have been great for me though. I have driven from BR to Shreveport about every 3 weeks since 1981.

You sure about that. How much of that traffic is destined for Franklin, Morgan City, Houma, and Port Fourchon that would love to have a run of an interstate through the Hub City, Broussard, and other sections that are 4 lanes but are not controlled access roads?
Actually, once 49 dips below I-10, it really should get a new number because instead of being a north south route, it is more of an East West route. For instance if you leave Northbound out of Orleans you will head south west before turning due west around Houma, and finally northwest around Morgan City.
It really should take the unused number of I-6 unless some state is planning on using it. Or it could just be a mega loop of I-10 as I-810

F that....
I take 90 just to avoid BR at certain times of the day when driving back to Metairie...

You do realize when they built the interstate system, most went through major cities... I-12 was built as a bypass later for a reason..

So I-59 would extend all the way to the I-10/I-12 split in BR?
What would be the point of changing the title of the roadway? That would be pretty stupid by now...

Would be great if there were a better way to get from BR to Funroe.

It would be best to reroute it through the 190 corridor, have it spur to I-10 through I-110 and continue on to connect to I-12 somewhere around the Denham Springs or Hammond area.
This would effectively create a loop north of the city (which is growing) and would have plenty of room to be done.
They could even use the under-utilized Audubon bridge which would keep costs down.
I think more freight traffic would use it and bypass BR altogether reducing traffic through the city and on the basin. Win-win for everyone.

Government does a lot of stupid stuff, but I think they actually did this right. New Orleans is too major of a city to not have a major highway run through it. You would still need an I-12 equivalent to route down to New Orleans if I-10 proceeded straight across the Northshore. Basically nothing changes.
