If all of what you posted was true, I would be in 100% agreement.
However:
1) not his first time participating in an illegal hunt and then covering it up/lying about it
2) claims he found out he had been "duped" at the end of the hunt. So, why take the head for the trophy? Why not rat out the guides?
I would say innocent until proven guilty; however, I don't think there's a presumption of innocence in most African countries' legal systems.

Dude is a POS who was caught...AGAIN... for illegally hunting. Only this time, the dipshit killed a known and beloved animal. Otherwise, he would've gotten away with it.

Walter Palmer paid tens of thousands of dollars for a hunting permit. Walter Palmer hired a local, then-respected hunting guide. In my humble opinion, it is up to the local guide to ensure the legality of the hunt. Now, if Walter Palmer instructed or even bribed the guide into doing something illegal, that's another story.
I have a feeling we will find more out when (if) the guide is put on trial and has the opportunity to tell his side. Maybe he'll blame Walter Palmer. Maybe he'll blame himself. Maybe he'll lie to protect Walter Palmer. I have no idea. But it's knee-jerky to auto-blame Walter Palmer at this point.

While I partially agree with you, I do think the public is more enraged about it being a lion. Yes, it would not be a story if it wasnt this particular lion, but I do think that people grant the right to hunt these exotic animals a little too freely.
Regulations or not, you can't argue he fact in the past half centuries, the lion population, along with the rhino population, has dwindled. I'm not saying this is directly due to license hunting, but there was over 600 lions hunted in the past year. The numbers don't add up.
I'm all for hunting to control a species population, but hunting a species that's on the edge of endangerment is a very touchy thing.
I think that it's extremely unfortunate what happened, especially if he had no idea of what was happening. If he did know that he was baiting a lion off his protected habitat, then frick him.
