Honda Accord Sport- New $25k-ish

35 MPG Highway, drive it 3 years and put 100k on it it, sell it for $16k-$17k

$2k-$3k per year for something reliable with resale and looks OK.

I have a Sonata, and it is just a workhorse. Cheap, comfortable, and gets you A-B.

I used to take it Savannah-New Orleans once a month and could make it on a single tank of gas.

My pops 2012 Sierra he uses for work has almost 180k on it, he justifies it by saying parts are so plentiful; and repairs are cheap and easy as hell for him to do himself on it. So its not THAT idiotic

I was putting 240 mpd on a 03 F-150 for about 4 months before I got a house where I am now. Now my commute is 2.2 miles.

Totally concur. It's only in my mind because I recently rented a new 300. The sucker was smooth as silk with fantastic power. Very fun to drive. Had to remind myself that in 2 years, the headlights will fall off

Honda Accord. I put about 70k on one in a little over 2 years and never had a problem outside of a flat tire from a nail on the road.

Bought a 2008 carolla in 2013 with only 45k miles. Put about 80k on it in 3 years. Avg over 30mpg.
When you factor in how much cheaper it is to maintain it besides fuel for it, compared to my z71, it was a no brainer.

A hybrid really won't help you all that much on the interstate.

A diesel would get better mileage at hwy speeds.

Any of those would work. $25K is actually a lot for what you need. I do 160miles/day. I got a car for $6K with 90K miles on it for my commute and I'll hit 200K miles in June. I've only needed a brake job and tires. As long as you change the oil and air filter on schedule, most cars nowadays will last a long time. Plus, insurance is cheap and you DGAF where you park it.

I did 125 per day for a while, but it was two lane highways, so slightly different. Beyond picking a car, choose something that's halfway fun to drive, has satellite radio, seat warmers, Bluetooth capabilities that allows for hands free calls and listening to podcasts and other items on your device.

I'd also recommend getting a separate device, besides your phone, just for the car. Spending 15 hrs in the car per week, you fill up a phone with music, ebooks, etc.

Good luck, I know many don't mind it, but I struggled with the amount of time I spent by myself. It'd ultimately the reason we moved and started new jobs. Try your best to embrace it and exercise as much as you can to help with the additional sitting you will do.

I drive A LOT. 225k+ miles in less than 4 years. 85k last year. I am in a TDI Passat. I have been very happy with the diesel. Since they are not currently in production, I don't know what I would buy if I totaled this one.

I drive about 60 miles per day. I've got a Jetta TDI. Opposite of what some other posters have said, I've grown to enjoy the little car. I had a Z71 truck and then a Tahoe before this. My wife now drives the Tahoe and I absolutely hate driving it on the interstate around Houston. The little car is just easier to get around in traffic. And it's just me and a laptop bag, so I don't really need a lot of space.

As far as the car, I haven't really had a single issue with it (70k miles). Averaging over 40 mpg and that's with terrible stop and go Houston traffic. Maintenance isn't the cheapest, but the fuel savings more than made up for it. Only problem is you can't get them now . I would not buy a VW at the moment. Not because the car hasn't been good, but I'm not a fan of the company at this point in time.

Also, I'd stay the hell away from a hybrid if it's mostly interstate miles. You aren't getting much better fuel economy than a regular in that situation and lots more to break.
