I did a commute of 220 miles per day for four years. I drove my truck for the first six months, but decided to go smaller for fuel economy. (Gas at the time was just shy of $3.50 per gallon).
I bought a one year old Sonata, loaded, for well under 20k. It's been a fantastic car. I don't have that commute anymore, but I still drive the car.
BTW, at that price point, the Sonata saved $31 per day in fuel, although it would be much less savings now. It paid for itself in a little over 2 years of driving, I suppose.

've done this drive and am calling BS. You're telling me you made a 10-11hr drive on one tank of gas?...
Well technically Statesboro, but yes 9 hours, 600 miles to Chalmette, one tank.

This may sound counter-intuitive but I would pick up a loaded out TDI VW Passat, the resale on them has collapsed due to the emission scandal but they are still well built vehicles that get close to 50mpg.

Here's your out of the box answer...
If it's simply a commuter car that you'll spend mostly burning up the interstate with and you care about comfort.
Find yourself an older Lincoln Towncar. I bought a '93 for $500 back in 2006 specifically for a travel vehicle to put miles on. I put nearly 150k miles on it and it was a champion. Got 23mpg and it drove like a dreamboat. The V-8 had tons of power and it never struggled at high cruising speed.
I'm sure you can find a newer model for a couple grand. If your budget is $25K and you can find something decent at 10% of your budget and just use it as a throw away car if a big repair comes along in the 2 years you plan to use the car then you'll have plenty of cash in reserve to either junk it, fix it, or buy a replacement.
Just another way to view the situation.

I drive 150 miles a day 6-7 days a week. Cheapest car on the first page of Craigslist, drive it until it blows up and leave it where it's sitting. Have a good car as a back up.
I won't go with a compact car again. You'll want something comfortable with room.
