Most people in here are suggesting accords and similar cars, which are more comfortable

A friend has had nothing but good things to say about the Hyundai Elantra (or Sonata if you want a bigger model, essentially the same car). She gets around 35-40 mpg without traffic. She drives around 90 miles a day round trip. Bought the Elantra brand new for less than $20k, pays under $300/mo for the note

ETA A F-250 Turbo Diesel would be your best bet though...truck nuts don't look good on a Hyundai

Only problem is you can't get them now . I would not buy a VW at the moment. Not because the car hasn't been good, but I'm not a fan of the company at this point in time.

I'll sell mine to the OP

But yes, I'm pissed at VW because we're looking to sell it this year and they're doing everything they can to avoid having to buy these things back.

I enjoy the time by myself. I don't enjoy spending 3-4hrs of my day in the car. I'm going on 4 years of it and I think I'm close to hitting the breaking point.

I also have a jetta TDI. Get 42 miles a gallon driving about 90 miles a day nearly all interstate. Downside is higher initial and repair costs from the Hondas/Toyotas of the world. Also the whole emissions issue is still ongoing.

To each his own

I cannot stand riding low to the ground in a car or crossover. It makes me uncomfortable for whatever reason.

I like the Tahoe much more when taking the family somewhere for sure. But when it's just me heading out into the crowded interstate, the little car is just easier to drive. The Tahoe is like maneuvering a tank through 5 lanes of 70 mph chaos.

my wife has a 2014 Sonata. GREAT CAR but my only complaint is the road noise. The dealership said that would change once the factory tires got replaced. It didn't..otherwise a good car

For that price you can get a very nice Toyota Avalon. I love mine and find it comfortable for the long drives. Gets around 25 mpg.

I commute a minimum of 90 miles a day and clocked 42k miles last year.

I'm doing it in an suv getting 13mpg.

But total cost of the vehicle was only 4k.

My advice for something you are going to pile miles on, go cheap.

Buy a camry with 100k on it with maintenance records and don't look back.

I've put 98k miles on my suv in the last 2.5 years. I would drive it to alaska right now.

I appreciate the advice regarding eliminating hybrids. consider them off the table.

The vehicle will be for my wife who recently finished a change of careers. I want her in something comfortable and nice. It's another reason why I don't want a used vehicle with anything higher than 50K miles.

if it was me, I'd be all about some small older POS but my wife deserves better.

no pics of wife but since she's a ginger, Emma Stone says thanks

Hybrid tech has gotten very reliable. Newer Prii (official plural form of Prius ) have been very reliable. My wife's is a 2013. She was putting 500-600 miles a week on it for the better part of two years, and we've haven't had to do anything but take it in for oil changes and put tires on it (over 60k miles on it now). Prius forums have many users who have over 200,000 miles on their 2010+ with no major issues at all. And you can get them very cheap as well. My parents' just bought a 2012 with 40k miles in excellent shape for $12k. They have as much space as a midsize car and get over 45mpg basically no matter what.

I don't live anywhere near LSU, nor do I work for them.

As for that parking wand, I'm in a position where I won't be refused if I ask for one, so I did.

I have a 2014 Jetta diesel with a 6spd manual. 50mpg is very easy to get. Knock on wood, 65k miles and no issues. It's a fantastic commuter car. It was $20,000ish out the door, it's much nicer than the other brands value cars (heated seats, power everything, etc) and it has much more power than any other economy car I test drove.

It's a shame Volkswagen and the EPA have fricked it up

I've done this drive and am calling BS. You're telling me you made a 10-11hr drive on one tank of gas?...

It's not thatcrazy. I have a Sonata and on a calm day with no traffic I'm pushing 41 mpg. Actually just got back from a trip and still as great MPG as the day I got it. Has 70k miles on it now. I do the speed limit and use cruise control though. Maybe a placebo effect, but I seem to notice a difference between ethanol gas and ethanol-free.

I commuted a hell of a lot for several years, probably a little more than you are looking at doing.

I would personally go used, for half that amount or less. If you need to replace it later, you will have the money to do so. While mileage is important, Comfort became much more important to me as time rocked on. Keep that in mind. Lastly, whatever you do, do not go with a Dodge or Chrysler product. You will almost certainly regret it.

Other than that, I've got nothing to add.
