I use National 25-30 times year. Generally, if the scratch is less than 2 inches, they don't give a flying f

just rented from Budget last week, and they. videoed the car before I took it. That way they can say there was no prior damage in that spot. I'm no fan of rental car companies but not wanting to pay for dings and stuff is tough chit.. And it's NOT normal wear and tear either. It's something that have to fix but they didn't have to before you took it.
Just go to the CEO’s office and let him bend you over…
This is one of those things you weigh pros and cons of as a a company before instituting and realize the likely resulting loss of business outweighs the $300 you’re gonna get from the Johnson family of 4 coming back from Disney that had a rock thrown and put the 1/10th inch scratch on the caravan they rented that a human eye couldn’t see but the Jew bot could.

I would demand a copy of the UVeye scan immediately before he took it out. If they cannot provide that, then how can they prove he was the one that made that "scuff."
How does your comment have 50 upvotes and 4 comments to it, including a "This is the best answer", and not 1 single person read the post. It says in post "Customers are directed to a web portal where they can view before-and-after photos captured by the scanners."
If you read the post, then you'd know that they do see before and after pics. It's definitely evident as to whether you caused something or not, the only element then becomes, if it is morally right or not to do this.

Every time I've rented a car, it was policy that anything an inch or under wouldn't be charged to the customer as its considered normal wear and tear. Is that not true at Budget?
This past Mardi Gras I rented from Enterprise. The car had a few dings on it, and when I pointed them out to the rental guy, he whipped out a ruler and measured them. They were all under an inch, and he said it isn't an issue. I still had him notate them on my rental agreement though.

My issue would be cars/trucks on the highway get damage that has nothing to do with the driver. A tiny ding is more "normal wear and tear."

My issue with it would be a lot of those little small marks and dings are just normal wear and tear and part of the depreciation of driving a car. They are almost always out of control of the driver of the car to avoid. Those aren't significantly effecting the value or operation of the vehicle. If this was a used in an effort to recoup lost value or service of a vehicle because of gross negligence of the renter that is one thing. This looks to be solely a money grab on the part of Hertz.

But shouldn’t they have to prove when the scan was taken? Unless the scan was taken immediately prior to your taking the car off the lot then it is of no value. Obviously, this guy didn’t know a scan was done prior to his taking the car off a lot so it had to be done sometime prior to him getting into the car. If they’re going to do the scans, the scan should be done right in front of the customer immediately before he gets into the car. An attendant at the car agency could’ve made the scuff before the guy even got in the car.

In 2022 Hertz hired Stephen Scherr at $182 million per year, 3rd highest paid CEO that year, which is good because he only lasted 24 months. His plan of buying over $4 billon worth of Tesla cars wasn't the best idea for a rental car company. It was a $2.9 billion loss, not counting what they had to pay Tom Brady.

Years ago I left a job where I had a company car, so I rented a car from Enterprise until I shopped and bought another car. When I picked up the car I got the Enterprise collision insurance added to the rental, as I had no auto insurance in my name.
A few days later, during a rain storm, I had to hard brake for a car that ran a stop sign. A 18 wheeler rear ended me, severe enough that the doors were jammed and I had to wait for a passerby getting a crowbar to pry the door open. The rear tire wells were jammed against the back tires so the car wasn’t going anywhere. I called Enterprise to send a tow truck, and rode back to Enterprise with the tow truck.
When I got back to Enterprise they acted like I shite on the alter during Easter Sunday mass. Every agent in the place was giving me the stink eye.
Some older guy came from the back office and started firing questions at me about how the accident happened. I finally told him that I bought the Enterprise collision insurance and the police report would have all the answers on what happened and the insurance info on the 18 wheeler.
They made me feel like a criminal who did something wrong.

They suck.
All their cars are dirty and they have higher mileage than most.
Last resort rental only.
Unfortunately, I think National and Enterprise are one and the same now...

My question is does Hertz after they charge and collect payment from a customer for one these damaged areas do they actually fix that damaged area.?
Of course not. No different than when you trade in a vehicle that needs minor body work and they try to deduct "cost of repairs" from the trade in value. It's on the website a day later with no repairs made.

I rent frequently from airports. I've never had a rep do an inspection with me. They just tell me to pick a car and go.

You owe to fix it based on your rental agreement. I don’t agree with their policy or their tactics, but it’s likely that other companies will follow suit. They may be doing it to increase the purchase of loss damage waivers; they’re very profitable for rental agencies.
Couple of things: Many credit cards offer free loss damage waivers if the rental is charged to their card. Also “Do Not Rent” lists are a thing and can prevent you from renting from multiple rental agencies.

Hertz Dollar Thrifty
It has been at least 20 years since I rented from them.
Pro Tip: my current go-to car rental choice is SIXT, unfortunately they’re only available at about 20 locations in North America. They’re a German company, minority of it is owned by BMW.
