I totally agree, haven't seen any banners around here but every interview with a nurse they are saying they are heroes and the local newscasts are calling medical providers heroes left and right.
tbh I don't see any doctors saying this. Pretty much just nurses and for every nurses post on facebook there are numerous comments on how they are heroes in addition to the normal "so beautiful" comments (even if unwarranted).
This may be a more female thing as elementary school teachers see themselves as heroes too.

the bigger question is this - who the frick cares? if it makes them feel good and gives them a feeling of making a true difference, and is an inspiration to keep fighting the good fight - why shouldn't they?
it's not like they are getting free shite from it, just recognition.
for those that are bitching about it, how sad is your existence that all you have going is the desire to bitch about something largely trivial, and honestly has no impact on your daily life - aside from having something to complain about.

That sign wasnt put up for the public, it was put up for their own employees who are having trouble coping with the stress. Its innocuous.

That’s just it, most don’t have the proper PPE right now yet they are still going to work. Essentially running towards the danger as you call it. We keep hearing that the PPE is on the way but it hasn’t shown up yet. Thank you for what you put in during your time in the ICU.

What a strange thing to get upset about....
I’m off today, but was in the thick of it again Monday and Tuesday... I don’t consider myself a “hero” but I’ve been a respiratory therapist for 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this before. With H1N1 we had really sick pt’s but nothing like these numbers....

You're getting eviscerated but I agree with your general premise that the term hero has been cheapened. Saw a meme the other day that put grocery store clerks, stockers, and fast food workers in the hero category with fire fighters and doctors. I think that's ridiculous.

Where I work, we make more money to take care of covid patients. Those that don't want to take care of them are replaced by those who want the money.
We're alot of good people taking a measured risk. There aren't any "heroes" right now working in hospitals. That could change next week but right now, it's people being paid well to do a job where there's mild to moderate risk of becoming sick and very low risk of dying from said sickness.
To my knowledge, there aren't any reliable numbers on healthcare workers and infections. Where i work though, we've had two confirmed cases and I work at a major greater New Orleans hospital. Also, at no point has my hospital run out of PPE.
If this virus mutates into something nastier than it actually is. You'll find out toots sweet who the real "heroes" actually are.
