I work at a major greater new orleans hospital. At no point have we run out of PPE or went to critically low levels. We're conservative with how we use it but we're not in danger of running out.
If there is/was a hospital in the GNO area that has run out of PPE, I'm not aware of it.
Not one single person I know, who works in a hospital is "running toward danger" right now.

You realize that isn’t the case everywhere though?
And do you consider reusing PPE that was designed for single use only over and over as having enough PPE?

I work at a hospital in Shreveport. Thankfully my employer has a steady supply. However, I have friends that are working at the Level 1 here in town and they are being asked to re-use their mask or have no N95’s at all. They may not be running towards danger in the literal wording as let’s say a soldier running towards gunfire. However, going into a situation of the unknown without proper PPE put one in danger of contracting this “invisible enemy” as our president says.

I do realize "it's not the case everywhere" but to my knowledge, it is in the GNO area. My hospital hasn't run out of anything and at no point have we "re-used" any single use PPE.
I hear lots of "fear and drama and crisis waving" and a bunch of other shite about running out but I have yet to see or hear about any hospital in our area actually running out.
I can't speak to other parts of the country. If however you know of a hospital in the GNO that has run out of PPE, let me know. Once that happens, you'll find out who the real heroes are in a hurry.

You're right about the mask re-using thing. Where I work, the guideline is this. If you put on a mask, you have to keep that particular mask on for the rest of the day. I see those as conservative measures, not crisis measures.
And as far as the n95 masks go. For the most part, only RT'S and others should be wearing those when administering bi-pap and the like. Those aren't for normal use. And maybe you're right about them running out of n95's but generally what I'm finding is people saying they've run out of things when in fact, they're only low on certain things.
There's alot of exaggeration right now in hospitals all across the country. The words crisis and hero need to be reserved for those who are actually in one and those places who actually have them.
Right now, Louisiana hospitals have neither.

I'm balls deep in the wuhan flu and even i can see it's too much. The cream in the hospitals hasn't come close to rising to the top and we all better hope it doesn't. Because if it does that only means a legit crisis has arrived.
Yesterday, it became official. Suspected or confirmed wuhan cases where i work now out number all other diagnoses combined. An actual crisis could happen but it isn't here right now.

Those masks were never designed to be used like that though. They are flimsy and easily lose integrity with you breathing on it all day. Thats why they are labeled as single use only.
I agree it’s a conservation measure and what else can you do if supply is limited but it’s horrible that we don’t have enough of such a basic item and are having our frontline HCWs resorting to such measures.

This event has made me realize that some of you are nuts. Doctors are part of a conspiracy, this is just the flu, etc. It is just stupid at this point how some of you act about this. I don't think people should be hysteric, either, but COVID also shouldn't be treated like it is some conspiracy flu.

That's true and if your mask rips or breaks. You know what you do? You go get another mask.
This is the sort of thing I'm talking about, the over exaggeration of this stuff. It's as though nurses are standing up and waving "what about us"!!

If you want to attach the word horrible to this, feel free but I won't.
It's not "horrible". It's annoying that it has to happen but it's not horrible.
Consider reserving the word "horrible" for when you can't gown up and when you no longer have eye protection. Now that's "horrible" and that's when you'll see your true heroes rise to the top.
Right now, GNO hospitals are filled with nurses who are making more money than they were last month with a greatly reduced census. There's empty beds all over the place.
Having to wear the same mask all day isn't really "resorting" to anything. It's an annoyance and dramatizing it into something more than that plays to the folks who don't work in hospitals and don't know any better.
Having to conserve masks and calling that "horrible" is why a neighbor pointlessly thanked me yesterday. It was nice and because it was nice, I made it a point to omit how much more money I'm making now.
