Nope, not a troll. Those folks you describe knew good and well they could end up doing this (this meaning a bad flu with a low mortality rate skewed up by the elderly and those with co-morbities) but took the safe job anway.
They are no different than the folks who climb mountains and refer to themselves as "brave" and whose "heroic efforts" are compared, falsely, to those who actually put their lives at risk to save others when they don't have to.

My 3 year old nephew was treated for a liver disease and eventually got a transplant through Oschner. Those people are 100% heroes.

And i guess the unit I work on doesn't save people who are shot, stabbed, are in life threatening automobile accidents. We don't administer rapid infusions of blood products and life saving medications. Nah we don't do that.

Seriously, all BS aside, what was heroic? They did what they were trained and paid, usually pretty well, to do. They replaced a liver, or part of one.
Or did one of them say "here, take a piece of my liver to help this person"? I bet not. It was just one more in a long line of surgeries they do every day, will do again tomorrow and in six months and a year. they don't know your nephew's name today.
He got a great result? Good. They did their job. I bet if something which was well within the acceptable risk/informed consent went wrong and you nephew died, you'd have a vastly different opinion. I see that every single day.

Firefighters who ran into the Twin Towers on 9/11 were trained and paid to do so.
Police who worked 24 hour shifts to capture the Boston Marathon bombers were trained and paid to do so.
Were they not heros?
A person doesn’t have to act solely out of the kindness of their heart to be a hero.
