I just looked on Google flights: direct flights from the South to New York City run ~$333/ticket.
I just went with the most touristy place. Why in the hell would you spend $800/night on a hotel if you're an average American family?

I've been to NYC multiple times. It's not impossible to do it on a budget.
Whole point of this thread is to discuss "scraping by" and the definition of it.
As I just responded to Trill, I used Google to quickly find 3 direct flight plane tickets and 3 nights for $1600 total. You want to send the family to Peter Luger's and Daniel every night, fine. But it's not a necessity.
That kind of thinking is why we get the couple in the OP.

They could, but do they need to? Not how I would spend my money, but they are saving for their retirement, and they actually have money left over after accounting for even frivolous spending. So are they really overspending? Or, are they just not saving up to the levels you think you would at that income?

I'm in Fayetteville, XNA is expensive for direct flights. A bottle at any of the clubs cost $500 each. and if your paying $500 for a room in NYC your staying in some dump.
