I have a very fun and rewarding career? I enjoy going to work every day.
I don't really even call it work .

quote:I agree with your overall premise in that discussion but $500+ per month in lessons for something for a kid who 4 years old or younger...hell i'm not even saying that's absurd or shouldn't be spent, but if you're spending it, that's part of your disposable income, that's obviously not a must have.
brb giving my kid a second-rate childhood
So the $5700 figure is wayyyyy off, it's easily more in the $20-30k range, and that's being generous.
Basically, the author doesn't really understand what disposable income is....unless he was mocking the hypothetical family? I did not read the article

Three plane tickets: $1000
Hotels in Times Square: ~$600 for three nights
Food for three (9 meals, say a few snacks): ~$250
So that's what? $1800 right there? Where the hell are you getting $5000?

$3,000/month mortgage will do it. I'm sure its a shitty little house too.
On that income, anyone smart should be paying no more than $1500-$2000.
That's 12,000-18,000 per year right there.
Idiots.

quote:yeah, I don't see how they're "scraping by". Like lnchbox said, they have about $500 extra each month and have several expenses (vacation, clothing, child lessons, etc.) that could be reduced if something came up. And they could obviously save a good bit by moving to the suburbs.
It seems people are missing the point. It's to make fun of the mindset that these folks are "just scraping by"

How do you know that? Is spending money a prerequisite for fun?

How in the frick can you not like vacations? Especially as a single dude

That is just a bad hypothetical. How do you only have $500K in term when you make $100K? And an effective tax rate of 30%? Come on.
It isnt hard to struggle on $200K. Stuff can pile up and out pace income at any level, but when it does you dont spend $300 a month on clothes, and go on 2 vacations.

Hitting up the Applebee's 20 for $20?
No, but my wife and I can have a nice date night for ~$50. We don't order alcohol out. We do one...maybe two expensive date nights per month. Try to do other things. And we can always allocate money from other areas to our dates if we want to.
Point is, people are "scraping by" on much, much less.

Because every quarter I have flown out to NYC / Seattle / KC / Chicago for business. I get my fill there.
Not to mention right now we are running another project out of Houston that I travel for when needed.
edit: It's on the companies dime.

That trip will run you closer to $15k. For about a week. If you do it right. And that's with no kids.
Just saying.

2 plane tickets direct $1,500
Time Square is for queers 3 nights downtown somewhere $800 a night (at least) $2,400. 3 lunches $300. Dinners $200 each, drinks at the club $1,000. ubers $300...
easily hit 5k. just a round of drinks in the hotel lobbyy for 2 is $40

I like drinking in Mexico and hiking in Moab more though.
