My aunt and uncle (now deceased) lived on the other side of the Nolichucky off the Erwin Highway (81). I know where Mosheim is (11E coming into Greeneville).

This is so heartbreaking. This nation needs to come together and help all affected. And by that I mean the people. We’re about to find out just how worthless our federal government is.
Billions of $$ more for Ukraine authorized just a couple of days ago.
We’re already paying salaries of Ukrainian government workers, and pensions of retired Ukrainians.
We’re spending billions of $$ taking in millions of illegals.
Our government has its priorities.

NC. Never in a million years thought it would be this bad here.
Didn’t yall have massive flooding in 1916? All man made infrastructure will eventually fail and Mother Nature will win. Everyone should look to the past and see what the worst natural disaster for their area was and prepare for that.

The craziest thing is all of the house fires from lithium batteries meeting salt water.
Media didn’t want any part of that story when people started showing videos of hybrid batteries in cars blowing up and burning down homes after Idalia.

Blows my mind that sheriff’s departments and other first responders don’t have satellite phones and other more reliable communication devices at their disposal for use during natural disasters

Still no power here.
I'm hopeful that we'll have our power back on by tomorrow. We are starting to get neighborhoods around us with power. One day I'll spring for a whole home generator, but much to the OT dismay, I have most things running through my lightning and should be good for several more days.
Just about all the major stores and mall is open. Went to the mall earlier to get out of the house, much busier than usual. Certainly an economic boom for them.
Otherwise, we had a group of middle schoolers who went to camp merri mac this past weekend which is near montreat. I assume their trapped for now. They were supposed to come back yesterday I think. Next time I run into some of the parents I know, I'll have to ask for a status updates. Some of the flooding up there looks awful.

Recently they started putting in towers specifically for first responders and emergency services that only they can access.

That is not the point of my post. The point of my post was to look back at history and see what is possible then prepare for that. If people did that you would not have people saying “I never in my life thought this was possible.”

Does anyone have a link to radar track over the last three days? I didn’t have any cell coverage until this morning and still haven’t been able to find one and want to see why we got blasted so hard in western SC. I can’t find the final track to see where it went when it passed through.

Yeah, understanding what is possible is important. When they start forecasting such seemingly unreal rainfall totals you have to know that those totals are possible, and that the devastation that comes with it has happened before.

People and their short 108 year memories.
Could people been more aware, probably, but I think using 100-1000 year storms as valid criticism for not being properly prepared. Especially at this time.
If 100 year events were the barometer Florida and California would be empty.
Posted on 9/28/24 at 4:59 pm to SquatchDawg
Simple answer is the storm went slightly further east than expected. Add in all the rain the day before and you get major problems

Not to be an arse, but EMA should not be relying on cell service in these type scenarios.
In a SHTF situation the only thing to rely on is shortwave/HAM radios and generator power. Those can be set up locally/statewide and not dependent on large nationwide companies who are focused on profit (not that there is something wrong with that), but local authorities should have local resources to rely on.
Hopefully we can learn from this.
