We stopped and grabbed a bite to eat for lunch across the street from there at a cool little BBQ place and purchased a shirt at a store nearby in November of last year on our way to Lake Lure. Absolutely gorgeous country to take in on a motorcycle. It’s hard to fathom that it’s just not there anymore. I think I still have some video of that ride, and pictures.

What body of water is that crossing?

That guy almost got wiped out.

That area was (and hopefully will be again) about my favorite getaway spot in the Southeast. I’m just stunned it is gone

My husband, who taught geology to other Army types was really impressed with that video. He was surprised how liquid the soil was.

I just looked to try to figure it out and there are so many creeks in that area. The closest to the Google Maps road closure seems to be Sams Creek, but it could be any of the others, or a combination of some of them.

Prepare thy anus for higher home owners insurance and global warming tax hikes.

That is the Nolichucky River.
They also had to evacuate the hospital in the area via the roof with helicopters

Stuff of nightmares that will scar and traumatize a generation or two of those that are witnesses

Yeah, well uber rich north-easterners with all their bucket loads of cash building those high dollar estate communities on top of the mountains probably had as much to do with it as anything.
Not just northeasterners. There's an uptown New Orleans contingent in and around Lake Toxaway.

One second after was set in Black Mountain. If you've read the series, in the later books you get a good feel for mountains as barriers.
We have a widowed friend with a Black Mountain address who lives quite a bit north of the town. She way up on a hill with scattered neighbors and the roads to her house come up hill from the Nolichucky River. She will have to depend on her neighbors for a while.

Question for everyone
I don't have or watch mainstream media so I was curious if this total devastation is being covered by them?
