If they have a Newfie and live there they are assholes. Even if they had one in VA they are assholes.
I have one and anything over 75 and he is miserable. We live in Boston and when it snows he is the happiest puppy alive and won’t come back inside.
Also, they do take enormous dumps. Looks like the scene from Jurassic Park.

Did they say what the fine would be for? Mail slots don't fall under the statute for mail receptacle use, so it's not that.

Had the same problem at my house. I never spoke to them about it, I just picked up the shite with a shovel and piled it in their yard. After about a week of this, they got the message and made sure the dog didn’t come in my yard anymore.

I mean it's awesome that you did that. I wouldn't feel too bad. But yeah, there are more mature ways to handle it. But again, frick em.
In the future I would just throw it on their lawn.
I remember growing up there was this little old lady who would always let her gigantic poodle take a dump on my parents' front lawn. Caught her red handed numerous times. OP was wrong in his response. The right thing to do is pile it on his roof right above his entry door. Keep adding to the pile. After a few days baking in the sun they'll find it and get the message.
If it is to obvious id pule a glove on and throw it from your place onto their roof. That smell will permeate and it'll be a while before they find it. As long as the rain holds off
