Well, dang. Went to it back when Jindal was in office. It was pretty nice, had a good time. First time I'd ever spent much time in that area. A shame that has happened.

Can't be stressed enough. Joe Biden tried to warn us almost daily. Joe Biden is a genius. We should have listened but we didn't. Now look what we have done.

It used to be so nice up until a certain demographic started attending.

Im from that area and over 70 years old and I can truthfully say it has not been nice in a very very long time. Maybe was nice the first few years after it started and was just local.

We left before the shootings happened.

Never, ever again. Too crowded, and maybe the trashiest event I’ve been to in my life. So far, anyway.

this
we moved to Hammond after Katrina and went that first year and it was the trashiest thing I’ve ever attended. The crowd is a mix of “the hills have eyes” and the Fischer housing projects. The saddest thing is the look of utter despair on the faces of the very good and decent people running the festival and working the booths. It really is a shame as I remember it fondly as a kid

I was born and raised in Ponchatoula but live in rural MS now. If I posted what I think of Ponchatoula/Hammond now I would be permanently banned, even though it’s the truth.

We all feel the same way!

I was born in Hammond and then moved to Ponchatoula my 5th grade year at Martha Vinyard Elementary. Both cities have changed so much and not for the good!!!

it’s a very weird situation
I’ve been in Hammond 20 years now, and we go to Ponchatoula several times a week. The downtown areas of both towns are great, way better than they used to be, and we never see the trash.

but they come out like cockroaches at events like this. You just learn to avoid it. If you avoid Walmart or any other discount retailer, gas stations away from the interstate, fast food restaurants and areas away from the two downtowns after dark you never see it. You’d think you were in Mayberry

that’s a stark difference between Hammond/Ponchy and Baton Rouge for example where you just can’t get away from it no matter where you go or when

lady. Sorry but that was no lady. Lady has a special meaning. Using the word incorrectly destroys the real meaning.
Her first instinct was to protect my daughter so I consider her a lady.

Someone shooting at an event should be auto life in prison. Need to crack down on this crap. No reason why a few get to ruin it for many.

I’ve lived in Hammond/Ponchatoula since 1980. It’s certainly not the same place it was in the 80s and even 90s. But I always hear folks on TD talk about how terrible a place it is now. That’s not my experience at all.

I think most places are a little different in 2025, and not always for the good. But we spend a lot of time shopping, eating, etc., in the area, and I don’t feel unsafe. Most of the folks here are decent, good people. Ponchatoula specifically is a quiet, friendly town. To imply it’s a trash town because of what happens at a festival where the roaches from across S La come to town isn’t fair or correct. It’s a conservative little town run by good people.

I see crime stats thrown out from time to time painting Hammond/Ponchatoula as a crime-ridden area rivaling the worst towns in the state. It must be happening in isolated areas, because it’s just not visible in my experience.

Ponchatoula schools have been ruined by bussing, which sucks. My kids are in the IB program at Hammond High Magnet. There was a time not long ago you’d beg, borrow and steal to keep your kids away from Hammond High.

I won’t argue too vigorously against those from the area who have opinions based on their real experience. YMMV. But for me I’m glad to live here, and though there are surely better places to live, and places we’ve considered moving due to various reasons, I’m not running with something that happened at the SF being an indictment on Ponchatoula.

Exactly.

They need to be charged with attempted murder of every person there, plus whatever actual murders they successfully pull off.

In reality... ain't gonna happen.

All of this. Born and raised here. My family has been here since the 1930's. Ponchatoula is a good and very tight knit community where everyone knows everyone.
