In today's society Never socialize with coworkers, never drink alcohol infront of coworkers, never make comments about a person, religion or politics. Just work, keep your mouth shut and go home, especially if you are a male.
Good advice for the moment, but a terrible strategy for long term societal stability.
We have only just begun to see the perverse ramifications of this societal stultification.
Look for some major trends to develop to counteract this path. Humans are simply not built to live their lives this way.

My cousin went to his company's christmas party last weekend and made a "joke" that got him scolded by HR.
The situation was he was at the drink table and his female coworker came up and asked him if the punch was spiked. He said, yes and that punch over there (pointing to different bowl) has alcohol in it.
She apparently took offense to that. Was that joke inappropriate for a company party in the day we are in?
I don't understand what about that offended her.
The big problem with many HR departments is they deal with "offense" issues like this based on who goes and whines first, more often than not (in my experience). Because of their mindset they would rather "warn" someone about something irrelevant than tell an overly-sensitive employee to "suck it up".
There really should be a "did you speak to them about this first" criteria for menial bullshite like this.

She initially made the alcohol-related joke about someone ‘spiking’ the punch. Perfectly acceptable.
Cousin baw thought he was ‘the funny guy’ by insinuating there were two spiked punches, with one containing drugs. A reasonable person will conclude he was referring to drugs used to incapacitate someone (see Bill Cosby) in order to sexually assault them.
The problem isn’t women taking offense to these jokes. It’s douchebags who think it’s acceptable.
Guy is lucky he still has a job. My firm doesn’t waste time or resources on sexual harassment training or seminars. We let the associates know if you are a shithead, just go to the strip club. Any minor infractions, especially against a fellow employee, and you’re gone.

But, she started the entire process of the joke by asking if the punch was spiked.
I hate this. She makes a joke, he responds, she gets upset, he get in trouble.

You fricking can’t be serious!
Woman can joke about spiked punch, but man cannot joke about spiked punch.
Woman good, man bad.
By the way, we ARE talking about a JOKE, right?
Not a joke about an individual person.
Not a joke about a particular group of people, (race or gender group, etc).
A joke about AVOIDING spiked punch. “Might have date rape drug, AT A COMPANY PARTY, ha ha, better watch out.
A stupid minor attempt at humor just to LIGHTEN UP. It’s a party. Mild jokes are expected. From a sociological stand point, these social functions are an attempt to break through corporate structure and establish human socialization, of which, mild joking is just the start. Dancing and lamp shades come much later.
Where is the offensive part? I do not see it.

Crude jokes are the best jokes. I don't want to live in a world where we are forced to lose our sense of humor because someone might be offended.
It's not like the guy said "yea, the other one is spiked with ketamine, don't get raped! haha!"

Good gravy. I am so glad I left the soulless corporate environment where every interaction was like living in Gestapo controlled Nazi Germany.

I didn't get the joke until I read other post...
Someone being offended by it is ridiculous. Im guessing she's ugly and sexually frustrated, probably needs to drink the punch and loosen up

I'll admit I would've laughed at that joke.

She opened the door for the joke. He had a reasonable assumption that she was making a joke about such things and responded in kind. That actually sets a dangerous precedent of women ambiguously goading men into what they think is a joke then destroying their livelihood. I guess women in the workplace is turning out to be a shitty idea as a whole.

I hope it's not a law firm, that's a terrible idea which creates a liability for the business. Good luck dealing with an EEOC complaint should one occur.

Probably because working for your uptight company would cause me to impale myself on the mop.
