If it actually is your buddy, then fine, but in a professional environment, if you called someone that you didn't know that well this name, it's kind of stupid. You do you, however.

If you call someone buddy or sport who isn't your buddy, you're just being an a-hole

Of course, going to HR because you work with a prick who occasionally acts like an a-hole is pathetic

ETA: And that's different from some old dude calling a girl "young lady" - as he probably intends nothing but respect.

100% this. I agree with Mingo in that being called young lady/man can feel a little demeaning if you are a professional, but at the same time act like a professional and put your big boy/girl pants on and talk to the person directly. Taking the pussy way out and tattling to HR is worse than confronting the person and tactfully asking them to no longer call you young lady/man

She could've used that moment to gain some respect and equal footing in that guy's mind, but rather than assert herself and gain his respect, she basically forced that guy to do everything he can to avoid interacting with her in the future and completely lose any professional courtesy he might have extended her.

She apparently took offense to that. Was that joke inappropriate for a company party in the day we are in?

If he was smart he would play dumb and be like "what the frick are you even talking about? Nobody here is talking about roofies but you Brenda"

This is pretty much what I was trying to say. I'm sure he wasn't trying to malicious, but that doesn't change the reality of the situation. Going to HR is a bitch move though.

I'm guessing that if you're not trying to be an a-hole people can tell.

Someone being a douche with sport/chief/buddy are usually pretty obvious. And maybe a-hole is strong, but someone who is like "hey pettifogger, what's up buddy, listen..." is usually someone who is trying to fast talk you into something. It's not so much I think they're a jerk, but I probably do resent them for thinking that sticking the "buddy" in there is gonna help them get whatever they're angling for.

My cousin went to his company's christmas party last weekend and made a "joke" that got him scolded by HR.

The situation was he was at the drink table and his female coworker came up and asked him if the punch was spiked. He said, yes and that punch over there (pointing to different bowl) has alcohol in it.

If that is all he did I would be fired in a couple of weeks.

Well, that’s because context is everything. Walking on eggshells and being offended by words is no way to go through life.

You can sit here and belittle me and call me every name in the book and I won’t give a flying frick. I’ll just sit there and smile at you. Why get riled up and have my day ruined because someone called me “young man” or “buddy”? It’s asinine.

The only thing worse than people who get offended by stupid shite, is the people who are complicit and go along with the dog and pony show.

But the woman set the joke up by asking if the punch was spiked.

Yeah- why does she get a free pass? She could have asked 'do you know if this punch has alcohol in it?' and there likely would've been no incident.

Maybe she was looking to get offended.
