re: Harmless joke at Christmas party or distasteful?

Damn - that's very tame compared to what used to go on at the Xmas parties of a former company of mine. Someone would get fired for Xmas party antics just about every year. One time a gal got let go because she introduced her boss to her boyfriend as "the HNIC".

no the joke was that the punch was spiked as in drugs. Since spiking a drink at a bar is now common nomenclature for adding a drug.
You kinda forgot to tell us this was at a bar. Is this a murder mystery where we have to ask questions to find the real story?

Why did she ask the question in the first place? He should claim that he felt that she insinuated that he would do such a thing. Did she everyone at the party the same question? Why did she single him out?
But first, we need pics of this woman!

Pro tip - don’t talk to women
any woman
under any circumstances
including your wife

She came up and asked if the drink was spiked, like if she was starting the joke. No foul here.

It was however a shitty joke.
Pretty solid for a quick off the cuff response to a question.

The lesson in today’s climate is to refrain from interacting with females in the workplace.

I wouldn't have said it. Could she have been previously sexually assaulted?
Sure, and you can see where this would have been hurtful or at least given her the opportunity to be dramatic about it.
It's sad but we really have to be careful of what we say when it involves coworkers

What if he had gone the "turd in the punchbowl" route? That would have been my go-to.
Would that be wrong? Should I not do that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started there that that sort of thing is frowned upon... you know, because I've worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.

Ok confusing...but I think I got it. The woman was seriously asking whether the punch was spiked(it obviously wasnt). The guy makes an acceptable joke imo insinuating that another bowl was the "spiked bowl" but that she should unknowingly drink from the real spiked bowl he was standing beside(both parties obviously knowing there was no spiked bowl).
Since women like to take things way too seriously and look for deeper meaning when there is none, she took it as your cousin insinuating that she have some punch to lighten up. Depending on the nature of the office, she might assume that shes being picked on because shes a woman and that your cuz wouldnt have made the joke to another guy(boys club etc)
My verdict: Acceptable joke, maybe poorly executed. Maybe the girl is just a bitch. Wear the hr warning with pride and give the bitch girl no further attention or drama that she is craving by pretending it never happened.

It's one of those jokes that either comes across funny or creepy. In this case the woman took it as creepy

He needs to go to sensitivity and diversity training. That is not ok...

I had to think about it, but this is the correct answer.

She's a twat, there's nothing wrong with what he said unless you aren't giving us the full story

Feminists are too stupid and/or angry to realize what they are doing.
It is already happening, male bosses are going to stop hiring women when possible. Male co-workers will be too scared to even speak to females about anything non-work related.
No joking, no social interaction, no friendships of any kind. No company lunches, no dinners, shite -- even nice guy larry is going to stop bringing you that free starbucks that you love.
Enjoy your new work life women, it sounds boring as frick.

Wall Street Rule for the MeToo Era: Avoid Women at all costs
quote:
No more dinners with female colleagues. Don’t sit next to them on flights. Book hotel rooms on different floors. Avoid one-on-one meetings.
In fact, as a wealth adviser put it, just hiring a woman these days is “an unknown risk.” What if she took something he said the wrong way? Across Wall Street, men are adopting controversial strategies for the #MeToo era and, in the process, making life even harder for women.
Call it the Pence Effect, after U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who has said he avoids dining alone with any woman other than his wife. In finance, the overarching impact can be, in essence, gender segregation.
