But you are talking at most a few hundred bucks a year in interest earned because the markets and savings interest were in the tank for at least two of those years. Whereas the interest alone on the payments could be a couple hundred a month.

You have no idea what you are talking about lmao.

I have slow paid mine for a long time. Finally will be done in June. Could have paid it off years ago but I was very lucky to have a 1.875% interest rate.

Why would anyone make interest free payments instead of sitting on the money and earning interest on it themselves. You can get around 5% interest on a regular savings account right now

ETA: not to mention borrows had a reasonable chance the loan would be forgiven and paying it before might cost you money. Paying it off today wouldn't cost you anything more than you owed three years ago.

ypou are 100% correct but you are leavin the human behavior part out of it. those that are complaining about student loans are the ones that dont have good financial discipline anyways

Reading through this thread is like being at a gathering and someone hollers, "Speak up and wave your hand if you are a deadbeat dumbass."

Luckily, both my wife and I did not have to get student loans.

I was on full academic scholarships for college and worked during med school.

Wife's college was paid for by her tennis + academic scholarships and her parents.

I had about $9,000 left to pay. I stopped paying after Biden got elected, and the freeze went into place to see if he would erase anything. I had already paid back $50,000. Wasn’t gonna turn it down if he forgave everything. After it of course didn’t happen I just went ahead and paid the whole $9,000 off. Feels good to be free of the bullshite.

I was lucky enough to get in and out of engineering undergrad in 4 years with scholarships and living expense assistance from father with $0 debt. Fiancé has $54k in loans from PA school, she earns a nice income. she’s going to be moving in with me (cheap mortgage) and losing her expensive rent and plan is for us to pay ~$4000-$4500 a month and it’ll be gone by end of 2024 at the absolute latest.

How did you manage to make enough to pay for tuition while simultaneously in school? Good on you.

This needed to happen. Now these same people have record credit card debt on them as well as these payments.

Dont forget house payments. Alot of these folks bought during covid when rates were super low and they didnt have to worry about student loans. Wait until that mortgage is due along with student loan payments and other bills. Yikes.

Public medical schools back then were not nearly as much $$ as now... maybe $6-8k per year?

Also, I had a small inheritance from my grandfather and money saved from working during college.

One of my friends enlisted in the AirForce, they fully paid for his college and medical school tuitions with additional living stipends.

So, it is possible to not rely on student loans...

Yeah, this made no sense. If they took on a mortgage payment that was dependent on dropping the student loan payment, they did not assess the situation correctly.

Well it just seems most of his supporters on this site have a different take than he does apparently.

That doesn't strike anyone else as odd?

So your advice is family money or have been born prior? Awesome, let me get on that

Nah it’s completely different on here when certain people skip out on their debts.

Elon intentionally defaulted on his Twitter building lease by not paying and forced his landlord to renegotiate. It was lauded on here as a savvy business move for him to not pay on a lease he agreed to pay.

My wife pointed out that there are 26 year-olds that first got student loans as freshmen in the Fall of 2016, and this will be their first payment.

He never offered advice. Just said he was lucky to have not had to take student loans and explained how that happened.
