Outside of financial urgency, it was really dumb for those who stopped and missed the interest-free payments.

I’ll be the first to admit, I continued paying for like 6 months and then said ‘f-it’ I’ll take advantage of the situation and use that money elsewhere. Selfishly, I hate it’s coming back but I get it. You have a debt you pay it back. Simple enough.

Hopefully, you at least invested it and saw a return on that money.

I’m sure another pause is coming soon or based on the next election more forgiveness coming.

I'm pretty sure Biden already said there's a multi-month, maybe even a 1 year, on-boarding where non-payment won't have any negative affects on your credit and late fees won't accrue.

However, interest will still accrue starting now.

We stopped because interest wasn’t accruing and there was hearsay of forgiving the balance. As much as I abhor debt forgiveness on student loans I’m not gonna pay $3k (remaining balance when Covid hit) to a government lender that isn’t due. When it was announced payments were starting back up we said let’s just be rid of it.

everyone says that, few actually do it, and probably fewer even know how to do it

Why pay when there's zero interest, no minimum, and potential for the government to wipe the balance?
I've asked this question of others. The predominant response was, "Because I don't want to be a piece of shite."

I do find it a little funny that a lot of people who probably bitch when they see someone at Walmart with a LA Purchase card are freely admitting they are/were holding out hope for SL forgiveness.

There was proposed automatic forgiveness for balances under $10k. Who in their right mind is going to write a check to the government for a balance they do not owe? If your bank called and said they’ve forgiven the remaining balance on your small business loan would you write the check anyway? Might as well flush it down the toilet.

Free lunches do not exist. The taxpayers fund whatever "forgiveness" there is. I'd rather, as a responsible tax payer, be forgiven of other people's sometimes-stupid decisions. So, as long as we both agree you're a free-loading a-hole contributing to the demise of Western Civilization, proceed.

Wasn’t there qualifications to get it? I kept paying my daughters down, almost done. But now she wants to go to nursing school, so I guess I’m going to be starting all over again.

Call it whatever you want. When it comes it paying the federal government I'm not paying a nickel that I don't absolutely have to.

You do owe it. You borrowed it.

A bank is a private institution loaning out money they are responsible for. Not lending out funds that fall back on the general public.

Please tell us how many checks you have written to the government that you didn’t have to write

The pause was dumb and it’s time to start paying again but to say someone is a free loader for taking advantage of the pause is insane. I just restarted my auto draft for the first time since March 2020. Haven’t touched it since then

so you'd rather I pay for my college and your's?

you're not sticking it to the man when you go deadbeat on your obligation, you're sticking it to responsible taxpayers
