I would imagine the city being so small and old contributes to those areas being overlapped like they are.

Lifting people out of poverty would be the ultimate solution, but first the business aspect would have to be solved to do that.

From all account Jefferson Parish has receded in quality over the last decade or two as well, so the future of that area might look the same just a few decades behind.

area west of St. Bernard Ave has seen quite a bit of gentrification.

This is a 2 block sliver for most of the run of St. Bernard Ave, and it’s always been higher dollar property than most of the 7th.

Do the opposite of everything that’s going on.

Get a da who’s tough on crime and not facing 11 federal charges

Get a mayor who is current on his taxes and can speak proper English

Reduce property taxes

Build another jail

Offer tax incentives to businesses and industry instead of relying upon tourism

Seems like a simple start

ETA. Not concern ourselves with trivial bulls hit like statues and street names

It really is crazy how fast the area went to shite.

Not really Katrina decimated that entire area and a lot of middle/upper middle class said frick it I am out. There are areas you can drive through over there that haven’t been touched since 6 months after the storm.

I thought Nola East was larger than New Orleans proper - Algiers.

Are all of y'all just completely resigned to decline? I see next to no optimism on here.

What would an OT run New Orleans look like?

1. The East would be its own city with its own police department and statistics
2. Canal Street would be the Las Vegas strip with casinos and sports betting
3. Marijuana, cocaine, and prostitution would all be legal with both upscale and seedy red light districts
4. Overall property and sales taxes would be relatively low, but taxes on gambling, hotels, prostitution, and legal drug sales would be used to supplement.
5. Police would be hyper vigilant in tourism areas to prevent violent crime and rapidly move to arrest trouble-makers. Outside of tourism areas, the focus would be on rape and property crimes. All police activity would be geared to solving, preventing, and punishing crimes that have real victims. Shoplifting would not be tolerated either.
6. Massive changes would be made to the permitting offices to make starting businesses much easier without bribing officials. This protection/shake down racket is a big deterrent for new and relocating businesses, and the permit office is slow and unreliable. There’s also a ton of unnecessary regulations related to historical preservation which could be tweaked somewhat to maintain the intended purpose without being such a wet blanket for advancement.
7. There’s got to be a way to get competent drainage, sewer, and water service. Most other cities can, so New Orleans should be able to as well if the will exists to do so.

Huh, I’ll be damned. I would have thought that most of them would have been on St Charles.

The city would be halfway decent if it just fell off the face of the earth. NOLA is a total shithole

What exactly is there for New Orleanians, or Louisianians in general, to be optimistic about?

Recent O&G changes sure won’t help.
