Well, there were a lot of artificially sweetened cereals back then, along with the pretty bland stuff like Cheerios, Rice/Corn/Wheat Chex, Shredded Wheat, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes and the like. However, kids, if left to the own doing would pour lots of sugar over the unsweetened ones likely making them as, if not more unhealthy as the sugar coated cereals.

I probably don't eat a single box worth of cereal a year and when I do, it's the plain, unsweetened version. I do eat more old fashioned oat meal and grits than any other type breakfast grains.

IDK about the cereal, but the girl in the photo is definitely healthy and would get all of it.

The post-WW2 era was all about turning the war time manufacturing machine into private enterprises to mass produce as much as possible.

That stuff was probably shite, but not as shitty as it eventually came to be.

The US needs some massive regulations on its food supplies.

I remember when clerks had to actually punch in the prices and use math.

The food industry needs deregulation

Get rid of food stamps and the food pyramid

Get rid of local ordinances and let every American keep a cow in their backyard

Get rid of the health department so that anyone so inclined can open a restaurant or sell food

Most, if not all of it, probably was healthy back then (defined as not having the fricktons of preservatives and shite like HFCS like we have today). As an example: when Gatorade first came out its total list of ingredients was:

water
sodium
sugar
potassium
phosphate
lemon juice

That's it. Let's look at a current label:

There is a huge difference in processed food now.

Cereal now is terrible for you. Don’t even get me start on pop tarts. They are one of the worst things to eat.

Yep. I did much grocery shopping in the above situation. One day I was in line checking out and I had 2 cans of peas on the counter and the lady checking me out asked me why I didn't just buy 3 of them since they were 3 for $1, then proceeded to tell me she didn't know what to charge me for 2 cans. I told her $.33 for one and $.34 for the second can and it looked to go right over her head.

So it's a good thing they now have the UPC scan codes to make these dilemmas a thing of the past...

Not to mention the carton of cigarettes she probably bought at the checkout. This was the 70s

True
The old timers down here love to talk about going with the wives to shop at Schwegmans. The wives would shop and then men would sit at the bar up front and drink hi balls and smoke.

People that sit at a desk all day think they need to drink sports kool aid to “stay hydrated” and wonder why they’re fat

I doubt the cereal was much different. I think it’s more to do with the sedentary lifestyle we live today. People back then were more active and mobile - more calories burned.

We ate far less fast food back then and even less processed food.

What sticks out to me is she isn't dressed like a slob like you everyone in the store now.

The picture is probably from a Kellogg's ad. Or did the cereal boxes in the cart perfectly facing the camera and in focus not give that away?

Except for that tub of Crisco.

Also nailed it.

There's a lot of garbage in that cart. Difference? Kids actually played outside all day. Hard to be fat regardless of what your eating if you are playing outside for hours a day.

This

Office jobs were few and far between. People worked, and when they got home mowed their own laws, etc.
