What about UMBI? Uninsured Motorist for Bodily Injury coverage. Do most of you baws carry this? Isn't this what health insurance is for? I currently have it just wondering if it's necessary and do most people carry it? We have four cars and it's become a major part of our car insurance bill. I don't mind paying if it's not duplicating coverage.

Well, that explains the angst and depression.
Dealing with scummy lawyers, scummy doctors and scummy claimants pretty much sucks

Sure, but its not the ankle biters that bother you guys, its when you have to request that 750k check and you know I'm getting 250 of that really bothers you. 250k is what? 2 solid years insurance defendin?

Have had some interesting cases in the last few years involving collision and diminution of damages. Apparently one doctor and one lawyer in this state got really mad when they found out collision doesn't pay this.
Collision and UMPD appear to be mutually exclusive under our statutory scheme, and you can only get UMPD if you do not have collision, and request UMPD in writing.

Also get a. dash cam, it's fricking stupid not to have one.
They are only $30.
This but don't cheap out on one. I have ThinkWare dashcams in my trucks, video quality is great and the software can overlay the recordings on a Google map with the save GPS data.

your health insurance and / or your medical payments coverage on your vehicle policy if you have that coverage will pay your actual medical costs if injured in an accident. The UM coverage is for the damages you would collect if the other party was insured such as pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of consortium. It would also cover your medical costs if you did not have med pay coverage.
In the event the other party is insured but his limits are not adequate to cover your whole loss for injuries to you and any passengers then you could also file a claim for underinsured damages.

It just seems like such a major part of the total insurance cost to be the most unlikely to be needed? It's more than my collision coverage and near as much as my 250/500/300 liability

UMPD is only if you don't carry comp or collision coverage though.

Welcome to LA and why our auto rates are insane
Our auto rates are insane because every lawyer commercial just says "Douche got me a check for 300,000!!!! He'll get you one to!!!!!" no mention of how bad the accident was or why they get a check. Just the thought if you get in an accident you get a check. And they have their own doctors who make up bull shite reports and swear on them. Then our brilliant state decided to just let insurance companies sue each other and intervene on behalf of a parties so we have an entire economic system built on personal injury lawyers settling with insurance company adjusters and lawyers for huge fees that are almost always unnecessary.
I hate this fricking state and lawyers and politicians some times.
It's much broader than that. It is also the fact that we have the highest rate of auto insurance fraud (which ties in to your point, but it's a chicken/egg situation), one of the highest rates of drunk driving accidents, and an extremely high percentage of uninsured drivers (that adds to comprehensive costs) which is one of those viscous circle things, we have a lot of unregistered or improperly registered vehicle, and we have horrid roads with bad drivers.
But, yeah, screw bottom feeding personal injury attorneys.

Why would you get sued if he ran the light in front of you with multiple witnesses?
I was in a wreck in high school where someone hit me then hit someone else. That someone else sued him, me, and my insurance company. My insurance laughed when i call them after i got the letter and said, "yea we got one to, Dont worry we will take care of it."

Mid to late 90’s I got sideswiped by a guy in a brand spanking new Jeep Grand Cherokee that caused me to lose control and hit another lady who speakie no English. Hit and run. He took off through the intersection, and two super awesome older ladies who saw the whole thing took off behind him and got his license plate when he stopped on the side of the road to check for damage to his vehicle.
Similar thing happened to me a few years ago, but I was like the old ladies. Daughter and I were stopped at a red light; turning arrow turned green (not the stoplight) and a guy in a white pick-up in the adjacent lane ran into the car ahead of him-- wasn't paying enough attention. He got out and went to talk to the lady in the car ahead of him, pointed to the area on the corner as if to say they'd both pull over and check damage; the light turns green, and we head off.
A couple of blocks and just a few seconds later, we see the same white pick-up pass us at a high rate of speed, and take the same right turn that we'd be taking. Daughter and I caught up behind him; she wrote down his make, model and license number. We then went back to the corner where the lady was now parked and on her cell phone crying to her husband. I told her that we saw the whole thing, and had his license plate and car type, and we'd help in any way possible with the police. I gave her my contact info and cell phone number. She was very appreciative.
Police called me about an hour later, got all of my personal info and the data on the hit-and-run driver's car. A few months later I got a call from the lady, who thanked me profusely. That guy not only had to pay a lot of money for her car and such, but got in big trouble with the law for the hit and run, something that wouldn't have happened had we not done the right thing, if we just said "not our problem, don't have time for that"
I love it when justice is served....

uninsured coverage is a rouse....until you get hit by someone with no insurance. about 50% of LA drivers have no insurance or minimal limits.
So many people can't comprehend the thought of paying for something that they hope they never use. It's well worth the money spent the day you have to use it.
If I am hit by a uninsured motorist, my collision coverage will cover damage to my car, if I am injured, my auto policy and my medical insurance will cover that, if I have a passenger that is injured I have liability coverage, if the uninsured driver sues me I have liability coverage. I keep maximum available coverage in all areas, and have a umbrella liability policy on top of that. why would I need uninsured motorist coverage?

Nice work BRich, and you’re right about that. We must get involved for the sake of justice and not letting these people get away with stuff like that. I was soooo grateful for those ladies doing that for me as well. If not for them, it might easily have been me against the world, and I was in no financial shape for that at that point in my life.

Totally agree about standing by and being a dutiful witness if you see something... but here in FL, it's not a crime to get into a crash and the crime of leaving the scene is only a misdemeanor (unless there's a DUI or death/serious injury). So here in FL, having a witness is important if you want the person to get in some trouble and/or if your insurance requires it, but it sure doesn't feel like justice (esp. since you can't get restitution for it).
