frick, that, shite!
Wife did this bullshite when we went, taking pictures at the edge. I was not amused especially after all the idiot tourists followed suit. There is railing there for a fricking reason.
You fall it's because you're a fricking idiot.

The 'scary spot' on the Nankoweap Trail.

I've seen the book, just surprised you don't hear about this sort of tragedy more in the news/on sites like this. What's truly scary to me are the number of people who sort of aimlessly follow the crowd out onto ledges trying to get these pictures, often with little regard for those around them. The tourist areas of the South Rim can be a petri dish of stupidity.

Never done it personally...but heard enough from friends who have. The super steep parts of climbing down to Mooney Falls at bottom of Grand Canyon.

At one of the overlooks I saw a German guy with an Olympus camera and wearing Bermuda shorts, sandals, and black dress socks step over the rail and peer down, while singing 'home, home on ze range.'

Been to the west Grand canyon. Once you step out your heart will drop. It is super beautiful

That's terrible. I think that sometimes people visiting national parks and the like forget that they can be dangerous places.

Probably hoping for a Joe dirt situation

Was completely underwhelmed by the Grand Canyon.

Just a big ditch, right?

edge (no barrier)
Yosemite NP has quite a few places that have no barriers and around a 3000' drop. In fact, the only place along the entire overlook to Yosemite Valley (all about 3000' give or take drops) is at the popular Glacier Point.

I thought I might be. Thought I might 'Clark Griswold' it. I assumed all the talk had to be exaggerated.
Then I finally went and was completely overwhelmed by the magnificence. I'm surprised you were underwhelmed.

I honestly can’t conceive of how this is possible. I travel a lot, and fully expected to be underwhelmed. The Grand Canyon blew me away.

Depending on the light and time of day, it sometimes doesn’t look real. When the wife and I climbed down and back up, on an unmaintained trail, we hung over the edge and jumped over crevasses which were certain death if we tripped. I’m nervous on the edge of the roof of a tall building but didn’t feel any real fear around the Canyon.
It is an awesome and gorgeous place.

I would go so far as to say that most of the south rim has no rails or ropes. People acting surprised at the prospect of someone falling into the Grand Canyon likely never made it past Bright Angel Lodge.
Nope.
I went this past August and was amazed at the lack of regard people take to get a photo. (Out on overhangs where it looks like it’s floating on nothing but air) There are parts of the trails you walk that are barely narrow enough for two people to walk side by side and it’s a straight drop in certain places right off the trail. I have a healthy respect for the GC. Loved it and can not wait to go back.
