A 14-year-old girl from the San Jose area was found dead below a popular overlook at the Grand Canyon, believed to be the victim of a fall, according to authorities out of Flagstaff, Arizona.

On Monday, Coconino County sheriff’s deputies responded to Horseshoe Bend Overlook on a report of a missing 14-year-old girl. Her family, who was visiting from the greater San Jose area, had last seen her around 2 p.m. at the overlook and reported her missing around 4 p.m., the sheriff's office said.

Search and rescue crews searched the area via helicopters and located the missing girl's body about 700 feet below the overlook, sheriff's officials said. Due to darkness, rescuers had to wait until the next morning to recover the body.

shite. As a person who has a healthy fear of heights, this stuff freaks me out. I feel sorry for her family.

Heartbreaking to read this during the holidays. I hope the family can eventually find peace.

That or too busy looking at her phone and slipped and fell.

2 hours for someone in the family to notice her missing? Maybe they thought she went on a hike alone or to the restrooms/food?

I think she fell into the Grand Canyon.

As for her parents, I don’t know how they go on. Can’t even begin to imagine their pain.

There isn’t anything at Horseshoe Bend Overlook. Just parking and then you walk to edge (no barrier) and enjoy the view. It’s in Page, AZ....not at the touristy south Rim GC Park.

We were there last year and there are many areas you could trip and fall if not paying attention. People get way too close to the edge in the areas without ropes.

Wouldn’t that be falling into the canyon?

Ahh okay , I hadn't been to that area before so thought it was similar to the south rim with the barriers everywhere. Do you think this incident brings up the idea of adding barriers in this location?

Even the South Rim has areas without rails where I've seen some folks do some truly ballsy/stupid shite for pics (or just mindlessly walk around while texting/adding pics to social media). Honestly surprised you don't hear about more incidents like this.

I would go so far as to say that most of the south rim has no rails or ropes. People acting surprised at the prospect of someone falling into the Grand Canyon likely never made it past Bright Angel Lodge.

There is a whole book(with multiple updated editions over the years) about all the various deaths at the GC. They sell it at the gift shops at the South Rim park(and on Amazon).
