I could never take my hypothetical future children to the GC because I'd just be a nervous wreck the entire time.

I just can't imagine that it would be a worthwhile trip for small children. They wouldn't be able to enjoy any of the truly breathtaking vistas, as they generally involve at least a bit of a hike. Plus, I almost feel like, to truly experience the Grand Canyon, one needs to have become just a little bit jaded. I've mentioned before on another thread that my first step to the edge and looking out into the expanse of the canyon was the closest thing to a religious experience as I've had in the last two decades.

My SO was with me on this trip. She had gone as a child and wasn't all that excited about going again.

She was just as blown away as I was. We started talking about planning another trip back to the area before we had left the state of Arizona.

It's pretty darn amazing. I find it even more stunning when there are clouds so that you can get a sense of depth perception.
I've been there a few times, and a few years back, we went to the much lesser visited North rim as well. The vistas aren't as grand, but it's a different experience, and the Buffalo herds on the long road trip into the park is also fantastic.
The bad part about the North rim is that it's only accessible by very long round about routes from the south rim.

I feel sorry you didn't read my follow up post.

The places I mentioned were more awesome than the GC.

why? to each his own. Its what keeps the world interesting. go to Big Sur and tell me its not more impressive then the GC. Same with Banzai Pipeline, Oahu. I'm way more impressed with nature on that scale than the GC. And I don't even surf.

Every year.

Grand canyon. Just one step back. Will be great fb selfie.
Oops.

Yosemite. If you try to walk across the falls, even if its only 14" deep it will sweep you off.

Driving highway 1 from Marin north.

If you go off the cliff, its 250' to the beach. Carefully look down. See the wrecked cars?

Saw a kid fall to his death on the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier this past July. He got out of the car to take a selfie over a steep little creek...stepped over the barrier turned around, slipped and swan dived over 100 ft.
His mom slid down on her butt all the way down after he fell to be with him. Was Rough.

That is an amazing hike, but some truly butthole puckering sections. A couple feet wide with sheer drops of hundreds of feet to the road below...and you have to pass people on the "drop side" when you're coming back in, which means letting go of the cable. Our friend couldn't get past that point and had to go back. This picture I took barely captures the danger...but amazingly beautiful out there.

Imagine having to pass those people in the picture on their left. You truly have to trust your fellow man at that point.

this time of year there will be possibly snow and ice at the rim. I’ve seen people pay no attention to the ice and slip really close to the edge. Dress warmly.

It snowed on us in early October on the North Rim.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because it's globally viewed as one of the seven natural wonders of the entire world.

Your two weren't any of the remaining six.

Amen to that. I thought the guide rope would go a lot longer than it did..it abruptly stopped and we were like...well, shite.
Add to it the fact that this Mtn Goat was in our way and it was too late to turn around and the stubborn sumbitch wouldn't move out of one of the narrowest parts of the entire high line trail and we could do nothing but wait.
Spectacular views and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Here are some pics I took

I did the Angel's Landing hike to the top in Zion National Park. It's pretty harrowing and it gets to a single file route at the top where you must cling to chains affixed to the mountain to keep from dropping to a sure death.
Multiple hikers die there each year.

There are no railings or anything to stop people from going over the edge on a large part of the GC. I walked up to it, and decided falling a few thousand feet onto rocks wasn't in the playbook for that day. All it would take is someone touching your back, and you'd be gone. Took pictures standing 5ft back from the edge

The wife stopped at the lower plateau and didn't go all the way to the top. I was glad, because she is short and it was a task for me at 6-1 to negotiate the last part.

Sad news, especially this time of year.

In 1956, two loaded commercial aircraft collided over the Canyon while both pilots were showing it off to their passengers.

128 total deaths.

Airplane debris (& dead folks) all down in the canyon.

I had never heard about this before, thanks for posting.

Pretty interesting read, they were flying through clouds and hit each other nearly head on. One of the planes lost its tail and dropped almost vertically from 20k ft and hit the canyon at 475 mph, disintegrating on impact. The other plane had wing and engine damage so it spiraled to the canyon and disintegrated. Debris from the midair collision and stuff that was sucked out on the descent was scattered.

The crash sites were a little over a mile apart as the crow flies near the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado.

This dude hiked down and took a bunch of pics of the debris in 2006
