We went 3 years ago and I saw a guy step out on the “ducks back”. I walked out there to take a pic and crawled back like a baby after getting dizzy.
Never again.
Never again.

Horsehoe Bend isn't part of the Grand Canyon.
It's on one of the Reservations and you just park and walk about 1/4 mile to the overlook. It's an incredible spot at sunset. We were out there in October and there is a spot that has guardrails where you're supposed to look from. However, no one was abiding by these guidelines.
I'm not afraid of heights, but I am afraid of other people doing stupid things and causing me to fall. We were there for about an hour and it was constant stupid selfies, jumping from rock to rock over the edge, and lots of running/crowding spots.
It looked like the Reservation was doing some improvements to make it safer...but it's only going to do so much when people ignore barriers.

My sister was at the grand canyon awhile back and said a car load of people sprinted to the edge of the canyon to be the first one there. She said they were standing inches from the edge with their backs to the canyon taking selfies. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

When I went I walked out to a spot with plenty of room and was talking with my dad. I asked him a question and he didn’t answer. I stopped and looked back and he was a good 15-20ft behind me. I said “Come on! This part is solid.” I jumped up and down and he said “look around dipshit. Other places have fallen off. Get back here.”
Later we went to a gift shop and there was a video on that discussed falling in. Said if you fall in you go through some crazy amount of climate zones. After watching that, and having done it once I’m in no hurry to try again.
As for the GC itself as an experience, it’s mindblowing to me. It was breathtakingly beautiful. I made the comment numerous times that it looked like someone was holding a huge painting in front of me. The place is unreal. I’ll go back but I’m not walking out like I did when I was younger.

How does one fall off a canyon?
Nature doesn’t come equipped with ropes, orange cones and bubble wrap.

There isn’t anything at Horseshoe Bend Overlook. Just parking and then you walk to edge (no barrier) and enjoy the view. It’s in Page, AZ....not at the touristy south Rim GC Park.
This. And it's not actually considered part of the Grand Canyon. It begins at Lees Ferry, which is a few miles south of the Horseshoe Bend Overlook.

Closest I got to the edge was Plateau Point. This was after hiking from North Rim to the Colorado River then Indian Gardens (with a few hours spent rock and pool hopping that afternoon just off of Bright Angel Trail in a hidden spot).
After spending 3 days in the canyon I was probably a little overly comfortable with my ability and safety, plus it was an incredibly peaceful spot to just sit for 5 minutes and soak in the sunset while reflecting on the experience and people I was with.
Trail leading out to Plateau Point:
Guard Rail Section (about 20 people were on the flat area behind this cooking/eating dinner and getting ready for sunset)
The Point/Ledge (I was sitting on the ledge below the one this lady is standing on with my feet resting on the bottom ledge; it was about 1500 foot drop to the river from this spot):
Looking at the pics now my palms get sweaty.
No selfies were taken.

Was completely underwhelmed by the Grand Canyon.
I honestly can’t conceive of how this is possible. I travel a lot, and fully expected to be underwhelmed. The Grand Canyon blew me away.
He was probably in Vegas and drove to the Indian Reservation which is the closest spot to see the Grand Canyon. Problem is that it's not as deep at the Western end of the canyon, so you don't get the full effect.

I fell twice at the Grand Canyon.
The first time was when I was testing out my crapons on some ice. Well, I slipped and fell at the trailhead. There was no chance of falling into the canyon there. I was ok, but I bruised my hip pretty bad. I was very timid on the trail until we got pass the snow and ice.
The second time I was going down a steep, rocky part of Tanner Trail. Somehow I tripped and started to fall head first down and off the trail. I flipped head over end twice and came to a stop sitting between two large rocks. It was a miracle I wasn't hurt. After assessing whether I was injured, I kept hiking.
Another time I was hiking the bright angel trail along the Colorado River. The trail was probably around 10 stories above the river's surface. Anyway, while taking a break I lost my balance and damn near fell off the trail. My walking stick saved my arse. If I would have fell, I would have been dead or seriously fricked up.
The interesting thing is, there was a man I meet on the trail a few minutes before that told me the story of his friend dying while rafting down the river. Apparently, he was holding onto a rope that was attached to the raft, and jumped in the water to take a shite. Well, he went underwater and didn't come back up.
The most "holy shite" moment I had in the Grand Canyon was hiking on the Tonto Trail along the top of one of the inner canyons. We came around a bend in the trail and the next thing we knew, the wind picked up and we were walking on a very narrow trail, about a foot width wide because it was too steep to walk normally. The trail dropped off very steep down hill to the right. I guess it was about 30 yards down hill then it dropped straight down to the canyon floor. When I got home I searched for the elevation. Turns out, if the Sears tower was in that inner canyon, we would have been eye level with the top of the Sears tower. I would liken the experience to walking along a steep section of the Mississippi River's levee on top of the Sears tower. Oh yeah, the wind was gusting, nearly blowing my hat off and my boot was untied. I was too afraid to stop and tie my boot, so I kept going until I reached a flatter part of the trail.
Here's a google map LINK
If I fell, my plan was to make like a limp rag doll and pray I could grab one of those bushes before I tumbled off the edge.

Gonna be there tomorrow for 3 days. Better not happen to me, but once I start drinking, you never know.

I don't know if you've been there before, but if this is your first time seeing the Grand Canyon I recommend bypassing all the overlooks and go straight HERE and park
and take that black top trail between the Shrine of the Ages building and Grand Canyon National Park Headquarters building to the rim trail.

Flew from Vegas to the South Rim (Bright Angel Trail). Did the tourist thing walking around then did a helicopter tour via Maverick helicopters into the canyon. Helicopter ride was awesome. Canyon meh, so your likely correct about why I was underwhelmed.
I’ve been more impressed and awed by the beauty and grandeur of Estes Park, Yellowstone, the Rockies, Snowbird in Utah, the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla. Not knocking the GC, just wouldn’t make it a bucket list trip now that I’ve seen it.

Are we blaming this on the border patrol?

Sad news, especially this time of year.
In 1956, two loaded commercial aircraft collided over the Canyon while both pilots were showing it off to their passengers.
128 total deaths.
Airplane debris (& dead folks) all down in the canyon.

shite. As a person who has a healthy fear of heights, this stuff freaks me out. I feel sorry for her family.
I too have a fear of certain heights, but surprisingly, when I visited the Grand Canyon, I walked right near the edge many times and didn't feel the usual butterflies.
Perhaps because it's a fixed object and not one that moves like a building or Ferris wheel?
Either way, this is very tragic and for whatever reason, people take too many unsafe risks when visiting this National Park. Me included.
