Whatever you do. And I say this sincerely. Be direct, firm and don’t waver but be open to advice and better ideas when presented. Hold yourself and your direct report accountable. Be sure they know the expectations. Communicate clearly. Less mumbo jumbo the better. If you don’t know, don’t act like you do.

Get a sleeve tatoo of the forest and deer tracks on the other arm. Get a can of Copenhagen in your back pocket and grab some white oakleys or camo Costa's. Bring McDonald's sausage biscuits on friday for the guys.

Tell them what to do and then let them do it. Don't stand over them while they do their job. You probably don't like someone watching over your shoulder; don't watch over their shoulder.

Set a great example for them. Buy them lunch at Cracker Barrel, and spend a couple of hours there.

Pen, paper. Write out your weekly work plan for each crew. Create a pretask plan each morning that the foreman lead for each crew. Plan out tomorrow the day before and make sure you have your material and man power ready. Follow up with the work complete to track progress. Only talk to your foreman. If you dont have one, make one and tell them they are in charge.

Ask them what they can accomplish with their crews and hold them accountable. If they dont fulfill their job switch foreman.

Your arse is on the line. Start at 6 am and leave at 5pm. Dont bitch to your superiors. You are in charge now. Make it happen. Whatever you need schedule it. Deliveries, inspections.

Seriously, this is good advice. They will know that you don't really know what you're doing, but you can make up for that by showing leadership.

Myself, I work in a baw field, but I don't have a baw job. I also don't have any management responsibilities. I'm a paper bitch - purchasing. These techs and mechanics know that I don't know what I'm looking at. They're patient in explaining things to me, but in turn, they want to see that I actually care about what they're doing and that I show an interest in learning the process tech. I don't need to know how to do everything they do on a daily, but if they tell me they need something, they shouldn't have to explain what it is or what it does.

You're going to eat shite from your bosses a lot, but it's important that you minimize how much you take it out on your guys. Stay on the level with them, explain things to them. I know I'm a lot happier when my boss explains to me why he's on my arse about something, and when he's fair with me, I work harder to get it done so we can all have a little peace.

My company is really big on daily logs and reports. Most days it's pretty basic stuff, but some days, there are some heavy jobs on it, and that's an opportunity for me to talk to the tech or mechanic about it the next morning over coffee. That's a nice opportunity for a relatively stress-free conversation about business, and it's a big learning opportunity for me.

Hell, I'm climbing to the top of the unit with a junior tech at 6:30, and I can't wait. It's going to take some time that I need to close out my week, but it's a learning opportunity and a chance to show him I'm not a total desk jockey.

If you were smart you wouldn’t have picked electrical engineering

You can’t even find a job to meet your formal training

Don’t pretend to know something you don’t. They’ll run you over as soon as they figure that out.

Don’t be a bitch and talk about them to others. If there’s a problem, tell them they’re screwing up. Be direct and don’t beat around the bush. Don’t avoid conflict but don’t escalate it.

Don’t buy them the same food over and over, mix it up. Get vendors to give you stuff to give to the guys.

Field workers love douchebags who refer to themselves as smart because they’re an electrical engineer. You’re going to have a great time and I’m sure everyone will very much respect you

Here’s my best advice.

Find one of the field guys that seems to be the most intelligent and hardest working and give him the most responsibility. The field guys are gonna think they know how to do every task better than you and all you are is a company man that is a puss.

Eventually if you show them you know what you’re doing and you’re a decent person to be around you’ll get their respect and all your jobs will be easier.

I highly suggest you figure out what you’re doing before your first job. If you show them from the beginning you’re clueless they’re never going to respect you.

You there to manage people, not do the labor. Let them know that you give your best workers the best work, hard work gets rewarded and laziness isn't tolerated.

Prepare thy anus.

Take care of your people and the rest will take care of itself. If there's cancer in the group than cut it off. Better to work with a short staff of good people than a full staff with cancer. Stick up for your guys in the front office, handle your own problems in the back office. Focus on retention of your good employees. Show them that you expect results and that you are working to make sure they are rewarded for results. Dont mention anything that you arent sure you can deliver.

There's only two things you can do for a hand that matter. Make his job better or make his pay higher. Everything else is lip service and irrelevant. You don't want to kiss their asses or anything because you'll get trampled, especially if its a well established functioning department already. Its been my experience that positions to manage well built departments dont open up often. Usually they are a cluster frick.
