Set boundaries and deal with the consequences. They most likely won’t fire you.

Your coworker is dumb for not turning their phone off.
I'm hourly so I don't answer anything until 8am M-F and once 5pm hits, my phone is on silent. I once answered my phone at 8:30 on a Saturday from a number I didn't recognize. It was a field supervisor who needed to play catch up so he worked a few weekends and needed some information that could have waited until Monday, but I decided to be nice and go into the office and get what he needed. Monday, I turn in my time + mileage to and from home and while I got paid for my work time, my mileage reimbursement got denied. Now, I turn my phone off on the weekends.

I get paid enough to suffer that inconvenience and frankly it’s better than having to deal with multiple dumpster fires when you get back.
This. It's called being an adult

What's the OT's take on this? Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?
My issue is less coworkers (they're really good about boundaries) but clients. I let them know at intake that we're not a crisis center, so if they have a crisis outside of a session they need to contact our local crisis number or go to a local hospital for assessment. Had a couple Borderline Personality Disorder folks on my caseload during my last vacation and if you don't set really rigorous boundaries with them they'll get out of control quick. I usually use the session before my vacation to remind them who to contact and review their safety plan in case.
When I'm on vacation, I put up my away message in my email (with the crisis info) and put my work number on do not disturb. If there's a true emergency that I need to be contacted for, my boss has my personal number to do so (and she won't unless the building is burning down type emergency).

Depends on the money you make, the more money, the more off duty calls, just goes with the territory.

seems like a lot of people here either work at a 15 minute oil change or have some mythical perfect white collar job

Wrong mentality.

I make it very clear to both clients and my organization when I will be going on vacation and that when I am out it will be difficult to impossible to contact me but if it is an emergency they can leave a voicemail and I might call back. I'll clear up as many loose ends as possible before leaving and set auto-forwards on my email (which I don't check while out) for specific clients/terms to other people who can handle things while I'm gone. Every now and then a client get's told "sorry, we'll have to wait till he gets back to get those answers." The world has yet to fall apart in my absence.

Teams and Outlook notifications get turned off. Tell boss to text in case of emergency that nobody else can handle.

In fact, a lot of the responses in this thread support this opinion. If I have a large client whose revenue supports my income need something, I’d rather deal with it on vacation than forward to the inexperienced “not my job” Gen Z’er who is pissed because I interrupted their posting on Insta.

It does if you let it. People think having to take these calls makes them important. All it really means is that people know you will accept them bothering you on vacation so that they don't have to learn to do things for themselves and that you'll do it for them

It's called having bad bosses or hiring people who are unqualified or that you are incapable of developing.
It's a desperate grasp at power and using inefficiency as job security. Rather that building up those around and beneath you to handle additional responsibilities when needed via cross training, issue triage, etc. it's trying to create a sense of importance and irreplaceableness because "nobody else can do _____".

+1.
This weird fetish of "look how much work I do FOR FREE!" is supposed to be a badge of honor? I think it makes you look kind of dumb. If I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation. There better be a nuclear meltdown happening if I'm getting called to leave my vacation to come back to the office. That's absurd.

Too many variables here. If I'm a cog in a wheel on a project and nothing is emergent, I'm shutting it off. If I'm integral to the success of something and the needs from me are imminent/emergent, I'm happy to jump on a few phone calls and respond to a couple of emails.
I'm a grown up, I can cope.
ETA:
One caveat is that I don't carry my phone around on vacation. I leave it on a dresser in the room. I'll check it occasionally. If I'm needed for a call, it needs to be scheduled ahead of time so I can prepare accordingly. You're not going to be able to just ad hoc call and text me and get immediate responses.

And you can't see how developing that Gen Z'er is the better option here? For you, them and the client?

I do my best to tie up all loose ends before I am on vacation, and alert my clients well in advance. With that being said, if it is something that is going to make going back to work hell, then I will handle it and enjoy the rest of my vacation.

I get the grind and the responsibilities you have especially if you are a lead or some type of management position but a vacation is a vacation. But i think that has to be one of the greatest fallacies about american work culture... Is work constantly being your life, even on a vacation.
So yeah..i would've said i would like to enjoy my vacation very loudly too.
