I have a co-worker who' currently on vacation with his family and apparently he'd being bombarded with text messages/emails. I just overheard him telling one of the managers(VERY loudly) that he would like to be able to enjoy his much needed vacation.

What's the OT's take on this? Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?

To a certain extent. I’m not gonna lie. When I need information from someone. I want it yesterday. Not two days from now. Even if I’m on vacation I try to extend that same courtesy to my clients and coworkers. If I can’t help them I will put them in touch with someone who can.

Take a peek every day or 2 but just reply in email or text. Not timely at all and definitely not logging into company systems etc.

People also dont read or follow out of office replies. When i return now theyve lost a week or more and expect same lead time.

A) I’m an adult and can handle calls and texts
B) it’s his fault he didn’t tie up loose ends or ensure coverage of potential hot items while he was out.

Uhhh, I thought the whole reason for vacation is to get away from work, kinda unplug from the everyday grind.

No way would I want to be bothered while I’m on vacation!

My rule is generally:

If traveling for work or at a conference I’ll handle business

If on vacation domestically I will take phone calls if they are absolutely needed. I don’t bring my lap top on vacation so it’s either a phone call or email to get something done. Preferably in the morning otherwise I’m likely drinking.

International travel: I change my status so everyone that needs to know knows I’m going to be out. No business done at all while traveling abroad

I mean... all you should have to do is put automatic replies on and then put the name and number of a DOA.

After that, if I was still getting calls and emails, I would certainly ignore them. I would also have a conversation when I got back from vacation and inquire as to why my directions were ignored.

Your coworker is dumb for not turning their phone off.

It's all dependent on what the job is.

If I have to work on a vacation day I'm backing out that PTO request.

set expectations before you leave and leave the phone off...they will figure it out or they won't but at the end of the day that is my time.

if you have set the expectation by engaging before...shame on you.

My vacation is my vacation.

Don't call or text. If you or someone else is completely unable to handle daily issues for a week while I'm away, I need to be paid significantly more.

I will, but I also have very courteous co-workers who wouldn't disturb me over trivial matters that could wait. If they bother me, it will be something fairly important, but that can be handled with a 30 second text or email. Also, my Sergeant or Captain will return my work-related texts/emails if they're on vacation too, so there's reciprocity there. We're all courteous enough not to abuse it though.

I would also add that often the call/text/email is generally for MY benefit, not the department's. It'll be something like "They're working on the quarterly training schedule. You have the option of these 4 dates. Which one works best for you?" If I respond I can get the most advantageous date for my schedule. If I don't, they'll just plug me in wherever even though I might have a conflict. It's easier to just respond.

Absolutely not. If I do, I remove my PTO and it becomes a work day.

I work for a mom and pop small business.

They’re a second family to me so they know in an emergency they can text any time but to expect me to answer when I want to.

I have a very loose work schedule 90% of the time so my wife doesn’t get too bothered if I take a work call on vacation.

But also if you’re so “valuable” that people can’t stop texting/calling when you’re on vacation then you or your employer has failed somewhere along the way.

Depends on the nature of the job. Clients need answers now, and he may hold all the information. Sucks the company has not crosstrained someone to fill in, or he has withheld information to maintain his own value.
