I 100% agree. I’m not saying these things should be normalized at all. I’m saying these are failures by individuals and also failures in management, by extension. But there are people acting like it’s always management’s job to just figure it out on their own if an employee has vacation. My argument is that in many roles, it’s management’s job to instill ownership so that the employee avoids these situations in the first place. Good people will try to make sure these loose ends are tied up before they leave, or hand them off accordingly. Granted, sometimes people just have brain farts/make mistakes.
The general counsel example is a little different than the others though. I’ve seen far too many cases where folks in upper management simply refuse to truly delegate authority when they go on vacation. Which is why so many of them are constantly on calls during vacation in the first place. I don’t want to have to call a senior manager or general counsel while they’re off, but if they refuse to give up that authority for a week then thats the only option they’ve given me. Most of those folks have basically normalized working 24/7 due to an internal need for control. I’m not saying it’s inherently wrong, but I’m also not gonna feel bad about calling them if that’s the bed they’ve made for themselves.

This truly is very job-specific. Problems roll uphill, so to speak, and it's not like you can anticipate every bump that may occur. A dentist can probably go on a long vacation without much interruption from the office. They're not going to call him because they ran out of mouthwash.
On the other hand, people making the big decisions in project management/logistics or working in outside sales definitely aren't going off the grid for 2 weeks. Can't happen. Other people can technically handle your accounts, but you don't really want them to.

If I am on vacation I do not ever do anything related to work. If they would quit hiring people because of the color of their skin and hire competent people they want have to bother you. When not at work I do not respond to emails, texts or phone calls. If I’m that important to them they can pay me 24/7. If not they will never get in touch with me. They should use the people that they hired but probably can’t depend on them because they were DEI hires

I monitor email from my phone and if it’s something that might garner a reply I just acknowledge I received it and say I’ll get to it as soon as I get back.

WEekends as well as vacations. I was riding around with the family one Saturday and one of the subcontractor's field guy calls. They work on Sat if needed to get the job done. Cranes are expensive to rent. There might be 30,000 pounds of product hanging in the air and something's not lining up, made incorrectly, etc. So yes, You answer the phone and see what you can do.

You're probably a poor, if you want to make big money and keeping on making it and continuously your income, you'll take those calls, texts and emails. If you happy making low 100k and staying in middle management, don't take them.

This is one of the only functions that middle managers should actually have to worry about, but in my experience they never do. I've always gone out of my way to arrange coverage and do occasionally respond to stuff on vacation. But, this is because middle managers/directors do nothing and are worthless.

When sold advertising in Dallas, my customers never failed to call me when I was vacationing, or playing A&M on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Nothing like answering your phone in Tiger Stadium and a random voice asks if their ad came out in the paper that morning. Being in sales I always got another salesman to do what our service people couldn't do. I would do the same for them when they were out.
