That’s not vacation. You need to set boundaries before it affects your health.

It can't be all three. Work to live, not live to work. I don't understand why older generations fetishize over the idea that if you don't answer while you're AWAY ON VACATION then you're a bad employee. Companies should have employees trained with redundancy measures so that if one person is out, their work is taken over by others.

Do these same feelings translate to someone who is sick/recovering from a procedure? They usually do not, so why do vacations get held to a lower standard?

I straight up do not answer.

If it is not an emergency, then it’s not that important.

9/10 I’ll bring my laptop. Will check daily or so and respond when able, which is usually within 24 hrs but could be a little longer. Most requests I’ve ever gotten have been seeking something that only took a short time to respond to, ~30m or so.

We seem to have a good understanding about as soon as possible/reasonable and how that is communicated. Don’t tell me Now or Asap unless it really is that, and I’ll respond as timely as possible within reason.

One problem with the vacation or even weekend work bothering is many adults (myself included) like to have some drinks and such at those times, so it may not be possible to give a good and timely response if it’s something complicated but I’ve been fortunate that nothing has ever hit a snag in that way, as much as I am aware anyway.

There was a time, not that long ago where you weren’t available 24/7. We did just fine.

Yep, that’s my life.

I once traded calls and emails with a PE associate level guy on HIS wedding day. We aren’t that bad, but when your clients operate like that, their care level about not bothering me at the beach is pretty low

They don't to me. The people I work with know that I will ignore them when I'm not at work. No "I didn't see it, I didn't have my phone", etc

Unless it is an absolute emergency, which it never is, they know I will ignore them until I get back

Buncha loafers in here. fricking redacting a PTO day because you had to take a phone call. No wonder this economy sucks

I don't always enjoy answering my phone or email on vacation, but these days it is expected.

I am a professional in upper management, and I am expected to be available within reason. It's part of my job and I understand the expectation. I also do my best not to bother other employees when on vacation, but the need does arise from time to time.

Loser response. Certain levels of the organization you have to stay plugged in even if you're away. Is what it is. Things blow up. Things breakdown. Leadership doesn't stop at 4:30.

Depends on your role. Some jobs shite just comes up that nobody else can handle. That said, there should be an understanding that issues get handled and they don’t contact you unless necessary. I always have a back up but sometimes they get something they don’t know how to deal with (properly).

I always check email early and late even on vacation to make sure everything going smoothly. I get paid enough to suffer that inconvenience and frankly it’s better than having to deal with multiple dumpster fires when you get back.

They know and approved it. Ppl at work are at work not on vacation. frick them and I’d expect the same thing if they were on vacation and I was at work. The world won’t stop because one person is on vacation.

Its no big deal to me to help with some info if needed when I am on vacation, but if I know that it is something that can be handled without me, I'll probably ignore it.

I emphasize to all of our customers to make sure they send emails to whatever appropriate email group they need to send emails to so nothing gets missed. If they send something to me and I'm off and it gets missed, then that is on them.

It's rare that people have a good work/life balance and that's sad because I don't think there should be any balance at all.

Life and family should outweigh work every time.

There will always be those who want to devote their own time to their profession as they seek advancement and I get that but it shouldn't be expected to ask people (internally or externally) to forgo their well earned benefits. Now, if there an employee who has work undone or poorly done, that's another story.
