Most mechanics don't want to touch a European car. The ones that do know they can charge a premium for having to deal with that BS.

They are criminal.
My mercedes had a wheel speed sensor issue. fricking Moss tried to tell me i had to replace the ecm (computer) before they could troubleshoot the codes. I replaced the sensor and the wheel bearing myself. Code went off, lol
They wanted 4k for just the ecm.

Because people pay it. My wife has a Porsche SUV. All of the maintenance is fairly easy to do. I bought a Porsche scan tool for about $110 for the services. It's been a really good car. Much lower maintenance cost than my GMC. That Mercedes battery looks like a nightmare. Not worse than my yukon headlight.

Couple of reasons, engine bay packaging and thermal management. Vehicle batteries are required to do a lot more than just power some basic functions and run a starter motor. Engines run hotter for the sake of efficiency. Putting the battery away from the engine bay keeps it cooler, allows more room under the hood for the engine, and puts the battery closer to the CANBUS system that runs the show in a modern vehicle.

I have two. The battery is not $1000. The one in my SL 550 is in the trunk. The one in the GLE is indeed under the drivers seat but you can go to NTB it’s maybe $300.

Here's why: if you need to replace a $100 part, you have to remove 6 other parts that costs hundreds of dollars each to access the one you need. If you are lucky, only one of them will break during the removal process.
That being said, German cars offer better aesthetics, higher end luxury and a better driving experience than Japanese cars IMO but you're going to pay for it if you aren't mechanically inclined.

You're paying for tomorrows technology today. Also, I remember the Buick Lucerne and its Caddy counterpart had a pretty large battery under the rear seat cushion.
