Is this really necessary?

Yes. The first oil change will be the dirtiest.

I think mine says after 30 hours. I’d follow what it says. But that’s just me.

Absolutely. Quality control in China is dogshit. First oil change will be dirty and full of shavings.

The reason they say that is that any residual metal filings, machining oils ect are flushed out after a short run. In the case of metal filings so they won't trash the cylinder wLls, bearings, etc.
Generator manufacturers don't usually make engine oil too...
So they aren't making $5 more telling you to change the oil.

I put in Quaker State 10w30 synthetic oil in and started using the generator at about 3PM today. It is running fine and I plan to run it all night with very light usage.
I'm only going to run a fan overnight, nothing else. The wattage has got to be pretty small.
Can I wait and change the oil first thing in the morning without hurting the generator?

Break in change is critical for any engine. Removes shavings left behind as well.

It removes the metal shavings from breaking it in.

You are more than welcome to test your theory at your earliest convenience.

I've had a generator for 10 years and used it maybe 7 hours until today. Today I've run it another seven and plan on running it about 7 hours tonight. Ive never changed the oil and I can't get out of my neighborhood to get oil because of 3 feet of standing water. Is my generator screwed?

Maybe. I can’t imagine the viscosity of the oil is anywhere what it needs to be.

I changed mine after the five hour break in and it looked like I'd been panning for metal and hit pay dirt. I'm no mechanic, but cycling that shite through the engine for a bunch of hours can't be good.
Just do it.
And when you have a chance, get a magnetic oil plug.

quote:Bro that's some old arse oil. Has it been running alright and not blowing smoke? If so then it might be alright if you absolutely have to run it some more, but I'd change that oil asap. Might want to get a pro to change it and inspect.
