It's hard to believe that somebody with Alzheimers at 95 doesn't have a home health company that does wellness checks once a day. Especially with his money. I know he had a wife, but as evidenced, she can't be around him 24/7 and may not be in good health herself.

Really sad. Wasn't it the pest control guy who came and no one would answer the door so he got the neighborhood security guy to come check?

If Hackman's pacemaker last showed activity on the 17th, presumably that's the day he died and she must have died on about the 10th. They weren't found until the 26th.

It's still difficult to imagine not a single person came to the house for anything or called them and didn't report when they weren't able to get an answer. Who doesn't check on their 95 year old father for months while claiming they were close? His own daughter said he was in good health and doing pilates and yoga. There's more to this story. I still can't fathom that they didn't have a housekeeper or some help periodcally.

I wonder if she had no symptoms until very suddenly?

With how loaded Hackman was, I don’t know why the wife didn’t hire a caretaker to help look out for him. Especially since her health wasn’t the best with blood pressure and thyroid problems.

This totally, how do they not have some care workers, home health or something.

So I guess the dog just starved to death cause Gene couldn't remember to feed him?

Story doesn't make a ringing endorsement for this guy.

Lack of food and dehydration could have been a factor as well.Very sad ending for Little Bill.

Arakawa, 65, was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom counter. Authorities linked her death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Unless they lived in a hovel surrounded by aggressive mice, seems unlikely she would have contracted an RNA disease spread by mice They had to have housekeepers, right?

Also, why would she just suddenly collapse in a heap in the bathroom with pills strewn everywhere and the dog locked up?

This explanation brings more questions than answers.

I suspect she cared for the dog. I read this dog was particularly attached to her.

So, Hackman lived with his dead wife lying on the bathroom floor for a week?

Sadly it's possible or likely he wasn't aware or couldn't process the situation. Alzheimers is evil.

This. I have a number of family members that have had dementia to the point they do not recognize us. It is unbelievably unfair and heart breaking.

If you have a family member with dementia please know that there are others out there and support groups, resources, etc... social workers. Take advantage of this and don't fight the battle alone. It will ruin a family.

This is wild to me. If Betsy was such a fierce guardian of his health, how are we supposed to believe his Alzheimer’s was this advanced and she still left him alone all day to run errands. It doesn’t add up.

he and his wife became recluses so even the kids probably didn't know how bad off he was and once she died he probably didn't know who to even contact being on his own

if anything the wife should have had a contact in case of emergency to at least check on him in his state

So she died and he was disoriented and wasn't cared for the following week as a result?

95 with Alzheimer's, he might not have even seen her. Probably just ambled around a bit for a week then had a heart attack trying to leave the house.

I’m not sure the murder/suicide angle people suspected would have been worse than this. Awful what happened to them.
