The stats they cite are from a Betterment app survey, and are questionable at best
I doubt this is a significant issue as no generation has a monopoly on half-witted gamblers.

Are people frequently using retirement accounts to buy homes?
Probably not. But if their mindset is to gamble instead of save for retirement…..then they are likely doing other things that aren’t so financially smart.

Isn’t the stock market a bit like gambling though?

This is the part our society sucks at. I like freedom too, put it doesn't mean freedom from consequence.
When you get on the government teet you are taking money directly from your neighbors. That money should not be spent on vices, or luxuries. If it is, the penalties should be swift and severe.

Aren’t they required to list calories next to dishes now? Or is that just fast food? I know they are required to have the nutritional information easily available and accessible.
Point being, yes, changes have been made at a policy level to address the issue that is obesity.
There are laws in every state where sports betting is legal regulating marketing. For example, La. Admin. Code tit. 42, § VI-517 regulates such in Louisiana. Notably, the law prohibits and mandates the following:
A. Licensees and operators shall not advertise sports wagering to a person by phone, email, or any other form of individually targeted advertisement or marketing material if the person has self-restricted or is excluded pursuant to the provisions of the Act or these regulations, or if the person is otherwise barred from participating in sports wagering (including, but not limited to, advertisements targeted to persons under the age of 21).
B. Advertisements and marketing material shall not depict minors.
C. Licensees and operators shall not advertise or run promotional activities at any primary or secondary schools, as defined by Louisiana law and including elementary, middle, and high schools, or sports venues exclusively used for primary or secondary schools.
D. Licensees and operators shall ensure that all advertisements of sports wagering do not target prohibited players, persons under the age of 21, or self-restricted or excluded persons.
E. Licensees and operators shall not misrepresent the frequency or extent of winning in any advertisement.
F. Licensees and operators shall provide on its sports wagering platform, any websites, and in all advertisements of sports wagering the toll-free telephone number available for information and referral services regarding compulsive or problem gambling as required in R.S. 27:27.3, and a problem gambling assistance message. The problem gambling assistance message shall be comparable to "IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS A GAMBLING PROBLEM, CALL [BOARD APPROVED NUMBER]" or "GAMBLING PROBLEM? CALL [BOARD APPROVED NUMBER]".
I guess they don't require gambling companies to expressly state: "if you lose the bet then you don't get your money back"...but that's kind of implicit in the transaction

Gen Z Dumping Retirement Money into Gambling Instead of Actual Retirement Accounts
:sigh:
No, they are not.
This poll is based off 250 Gen Z who have at least 2 or more investment accounts
15% of of the Gen Z polled said they used sports betting at least once to "accelerate" a goal, meaning they were trying to make quick cash
14% of the Gen Z polled said they "occasional" redirected funds for sports betting
and 11% said they used it as a "high risk" strategy for investments
59% said they either don't bet or use separate funds
This is a small sample size from likely high earners that hold multiple investment accounts already in their 20s.
Also if there is ever a time for more investment risk, its when you are younger

also hate how it killed a lot of people’s genuine interest in sports. I don’t need to bet money on a game to enjoy what I’m watching, but that’s my generations excuse for watching.
Fantasy teams are also responsible for this

THIS! There are a lot of suburban dads that need to spend a few nights with their families sleeping on the streets so they can learn not to make dumbass purchases. You don’t get an “awww shucks” because you’re white and grew up in a decent household. It’s you’re own fault being and idiot and you need to learn the hard way because the easy way didn’t work.

Finally, some one else that actually questions a source.
Levy probably paid for that article to run on the well-respected Yahoo! News site.

Sports did this to themselves. College football games have become unbearable to watch as they’re hovering over 4 hours now. 2 plays, commercial break, come back 1 play penalty, commercial break, back then booth review, another commercial break.
I can’t honestly remember the last time I sat on the couch and watched a game from start to finish including LSU. Now that Kiffin is there, I doubt I watch at all. I don’t think I can name one player on the team anymore.

What kid in their 20s has $625 per month in disposable income to max out a Roth IRA. Kids that age are just getting started in life and ate at starting salaries while also managing their highest debt loads with student loans.
Saving a ton of money early in life sounds great in theory and looks great on paper but isn't always practical for those just scraping to get by.
If they have compounding debt and gamble $40 a month, they'd almost always be way better off putting that $40 to the principal. It's like gambling on a sure thing.

You can either save for 30 plus years, or bet on red. It's really about the same thing. Then swing by Starbucks for an $8 coffee

Ferris Bueller can frick off trying to convince old ladies to blow their retirement on phone gambling apps.

Other generations didn't grow up with a computer in their pocket and one-touch legal gambling at their fingertips.
In my day, we had to get in with a bookie through connections, and it was a pain in the arse and much sketchier comparatively as it was illegal and shady.
The threshold for entry is all but gone and used to be fairly high.
I'm not saying outlaw it. Let people be stupid. But I do think, like I do for pharmaceuticals, they shouldn't be allowed advertise. Treat both like cigarettes.
