Egypt has slammed Netflix for presenting Cleopatra as black in its new docudrama - accusing the streaming giant of 'falsifying Egyptian history'. Officials slap down Netflix for 'blackwashing' pharaoh as they say she 'had white skin and Hellenistic features'

Netflix had been accused of 'blackwashing' history by casting the black actress as the pharaoh in the new series about the Macedonian-Greek ruler.

Producer Jada Pinkett Smith said she wanted to tell the story because 'we don't often get to see or hear stories about black queens.'

African Queens: Queen Cleopatra stars 37-year-old English actress Adele James as the titular character.

Netflix is developing a trend of race swapping historical figures

They made Anne Boleyn, one of the whitest fricking people that ever existed, a black chick

Funniest thing I read:
quote:

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities shared images of the bust of the ruler to show she did have a 'light complexion'

I don't think they had these hairstyles in ancient Egypt

And whether that was a good or bad idea aside, most people aren't going to care a ton because no one watching that is going to think the historical Anne Boleyn was black.

On the other hand, I imagine large portions of the world population incorrectly think Cleopatra was black. Hell, I would say the majority of the world's population think she looked arab. I would say less than 10% actually know she was Macedonian/Greek. So this is significantly more of a problem, in my opinion, than other examples of "cross-race" productions.

Be careful, or the usual suspects from the Movie/TV board will flock here to tell you why this doesn't matter and that you're overreacting.
