TIL

Not that I spent much/any time on it, but I just assumed it was part of the old kingdom that managed to stay independent from Greece.

Maybe Henry Cavill then?

Maybe Denzel Washington or the late Chadwick Boseman, Morris Chestnut playing Jesus would have certainly pissed off a certain demographic. So called Christian ones at that.

Correct. That area of the Balkans has always been a cultural mess throughout the centuries. Even ancient Macedonia was considered its own thing outside of the rest of Greece, despite the Hellenic influence.

My grandfather's family was from the Greek Macedonian side of the border and my grandmother's family was from the Slavic Macedonian side. He spoke some Greek and some Macedonian. She spoke Macedonian, and some Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian.

when you cut and paste stuff from The Root, you really should give them credit.

How much connection does modern Egypt have to ancient Egypt anyway?

What? This isn't true. The early Rashidun caliphate settled on the outskirts of Ancient Tunis/Carthage and merged the new city of Tunis with the older settlement that existed since the 4th century BCE. Tunis/Carthage was originally a Berber settlement, and the DNA data doesn't support the notion that the Berbers were ever displaced. Indeed Berbers made up a large portion of the early Rashidun armies, and indeed a Berber rebellion played a key role in North Africa played a key role in the ultimate failure of the Ummayad campaign after Tours.

In general, there isn't much evidence of large scale displacements in terms of populations in the ancient world. While Phoenicians colonized the area, the people who have lived in North Africa have largely remained the same groups, including Berbers, Copts (which was a term to refer to all ancient Egyptians) and others.

A lot. More than 90% of the populations DNA data suggests that there hasn't been massive population displacement since the Neolithic.

Interesting.

I would have expected more change with how many times that area has changed hands.
