If if they were to use an operating system, the data gathering is via excel templates. That onboarding process can take a year or two to see the benefits. Sounds like toxic leadership.

This is absolutely asinine for any business to track inventory be tracking inventory in excel, much less an F1 team.
This is way way more embarrassing to Williams than it may seem on the surface, and provides a good look at why such a formerly great and storied team has fallen on such tough times.
And now that their are (wholly?) owned by private equity, I don't see it getting better.

Amateur.... I could bust your vlookup easily given it's not dynamic unless you put an =column() that will adjust if columns are added to reference to look-up column.

Nonetheless, this is ridiculous for an F1 team. Sadly, i'd expect this out of HAAS.

Big sponsor of F1, that and Oracle. Williams has been behind for years, without the real capital to compete. Software was probably the least of their worries. New infusion of cash, new Principal from Merc and now the blame shifts to not having all the bells and whistles.

Sounds like a common issue with growing businesses that need to transition from excel spreadsheets to hiring business process management team. Don't they have better planforms for this than excel, like SAP?

The worst DMS in the auto business would run circles around excel for this sort of thing.
The one I hated was microsoft Access.

I would think the bigger problem with managing it in Excel is permissions and access. If everyone has carte blanc access to change data and formulas, it wouldn't take long to render the spreadsheet useless. I would hope they have it locked down for the most part. At least putting it in a database, building out the database with past orders and inventory on hand would really help with their future needs.
I don't know how long he harped on the excel aspect of the team. The thread makes it seem like he came in and thought everything was fine except the excel usage. I'm guessing it was just one thing in a list a mile long of things that need to change. I would hope this is the case at least.

Left, right, and multiple criteria. And it works on older versions of excel, too.
BUT - I agree there are way better business systems catered specifically for inventory control.

To be clear, what James Vowels wanted was specific engineering software that helps them track technical architecture. Using excel to for example, carry calculations based on different scenarios to be readily usable for moving to production
