Ford Eco-boost 3.5 ltr

You’ll hear a lot of haters but I think ford is so invested in this motor that it must be pretty decent.

Get the New 1/2 ton Chevy/GMC with the 3.0 Duramax. Just got back from a trip to W. Texas, loaded down doing 80 my buddy was getting 21-24 mpg

The earlier ones had some issues with the PVC system, timing, cam rattles, and carbon build up. They seem to have corrected most of that with the more recent 3.5L turbo motors to some extent. Same with the 2.7L. You should know that neither motor gets particularly good fuel economy over a V8. The smaller displacement turbo configuration is not to improve fuel economy over V8s - it's to reduce emissions. Keep that in mind if Ford wants to charge you a lot of extra cash for the 3.5L turbo motor.

The Ford 5.0L has recently gotten cylinder deactivation. It's the first version of it from Ford and nobody really knows how they'll last long term. The older 5.0's from 2019 or so have been pretty good, but those don't have the different cams with zero lift to shut down cylinders. Ford doesn't really do elaborate valve timing all that well, so I would wait a few more years for the 5.0L with the new heads to prove itself.

If you get the Ecoboost, your problem with Ford will more likely be with the 10 speed transmission that Ford pairs with all of them. That and with the multitude of sketchy vendor-sourced parts that Ford is scraping together to build these trucks since the pandemic. Ford is having major issues with recalls across the board. The likelihood of obtaining a lemon is very high with them right now.

This is a legitimately good suggestion. But the OP will NOT find a good deal or discount on anything with the 3.0L Duramax.

A family member has an "old fart" spec Silverado (2 wheel drive, extended cab) with that motor. He uses it to tow their camper all the time now that he and his wife are retired. When it's not towing, he says he can get 30mpg+ on flat highway. It's not slow, but it's not really fast either.

That MPG benefit is enough of a difference over the gas motor to justify the added costs of DEF fluid and the oil pump belt that eventually has to be serviced.

The OP will probably find a good deal on a Ford or Chevy with their 2.7L turbo motors. In both cases they are solid engines if maintained. He will find an even better deal with a Titan or Ram with their V8 engines.

I have 2012 model and it’s ok. Over time it’s lost fuel efficiency (15.5mpg on avg) and is laggier in response than I remember. But has otherwise been reliable. Have nearly 150k on vehicle

I had 2013 and put 147k on it with no problems from the engine.

It’s been around for over 10 years now so I wouldn’t have any worries about it.

Nope...expect to pay sticker or even over sticker

I get 25-26mpg ....I've never gotten that kind of fuel milage on a truck and this is the probably my 9th or 8th truck in the past 20 years (3 Ecoboost, the rest V8's and this is my first diesel) and none of them even compare to this one

I freely admit that Ford is making a lot of hot garbage right now and I would absolutely buy almost any other brand of vehicle over Ford.

But the 2.7L Ecoboost is mostly a solid engine, especially since they added port fuel injection to circumvent the shitty PVC system it has. It doesn't really have the carbon build up issues anymore. And it never really had the shitty cam phaser problems that other Ford engines had (including the 3.5).

When it comes to the 2.7L turbo Ford - it's the rest of the truck that I'd worry about. Not the engine.

I have a 2013 with about 240k miles. I have really liked the engine. Pulls great, fun to drive, etc. Mileage sucks arse. I get 14.5-15 unless I have a tailwind and the only modifications I have done that affect mileage are removing the air dam and putting on LT tires.

I just got a 2021 with the V8. Not sure which one I like more yet and I haven't put a trailer on it to compare. Averaging 18 mpg so far and 20ish on longer trips.

Good friend of mine from Mobile has a 2012 F150 Ecoboost with just over 300k miles on it. ZERO issues other than 1 alternator and the transmission gave up a few months ago.
