I used to want a turbo diesel truck and the straight 6 duramax appeals to me (because it’s straight six). But they’ve managed to add a bunch of emissions shite to diesels that make it not worth the effort.

I've put my 3.5 through surf, sand, mud, rain, rock and everything in between and it stills runs fine. It even sat through Harvey. The only thing I've had to do motor wise was change out a coil pack. Suspension is a separate animal. As long as you're diligent about your base maintenance you should have no problems.
Separate note: Mike Rowe did a 4 part YouTube series where they took a single 3.5 and dynod it for 100k miles, let a farmer use it for a while, then put it into a Baja truck and ran that race, then ran another 100k dyno. Afterwards they spec'd it and everything was in tolerance. Part of the reason I bought the truck.

Cam phaser issues seem nearly ubiquitous in my circles.

There is no extra effort. I have 63k miles on my 3.0, no issues with emissions. Best motor I've ever had in a truck, plenty of torque while getting 28-35 mpg depending on what I'm doing.

I've got an eco-boost and I freaking love it. If you need to get around some baws on the backroads you can do it in a heartbeat while still getting great gas mileage.

Not sure what year you are looking at but stay away if it has the internal timing chain driven water pump. It's about 3k to replace it if you're lucky enough to catch it early. If you don't catch it early, plan on replacing the engine.

I have a 2018 2.7 with 120k miles. Had to replace an exhaust gas recirculation tube that broke and it sounded like someone stole my catalytic converter. But that was a fluke probably from road debris. Only issue I've ever had. I'm in sales and drive all over Houston for work. Get 21 mph which isn't shabby for a truck

Who here has real world experience with this engine ?
Ask away, 2014 model here. I have gotten as high as 25 mpg but I now run about 18.8. I had no problems towing a trailer but the fuel milage dropped to 11 mpg doing so. Have had no issues with the engine itself.
Oh yeah, just about to roll over 200K miles.
One of my young engineer friends just bought a 2023 F150 Platinum with that engine in it.

Absolutely no worries with the DEF, turbo, particulate filter, regen, and high pressure fuel pump given the quality and reliability that GM is known for.

My company truck is a 2011 F150 with a 3.5 eco boost. 128k miles. I’ve never had any issues.
eta. Mileage: 23/mpg on the highway and probably 17 or 18/mpg around town.

My experience with the 3.5 in family trucks is that it has some get up and go, but gets crappy gas mileage.
I vote for the 3.0 Duramax. My AT4 gets 25-27 on the highway (summer blend) with the OEM “mud” tires when unloaded and doing 75 mph. I have 27,000 miles on it without a problem.

I am on my second truck with this engine. The first was a 2018 Raptor. Thr power was great but the cam phasers needed replacement (ford covered this.) The current truck is a 2023 Tremor. While the advertised power is less than my Raptor,, the new engine is tuned for more low end torque and is a much better power plant. No complaints. And I get about 20-21 on the highway. Your mileage will depend on speed and how often you hit the gas. The only reason I would have got a gen3 coyote was the ability to install a supercharger.

I have a 2019 F150 XLT LWB Super Crew w/5.0 Coyote - I get 22-23 mpg on the interstate at 70-75-78 mph loaded down with a/c running. No reason to add the complexity and maintenance repair risk of a turbo.
I also have the 36 gallon fuel tank and can easily go from Cape Canaveral, FL to Slidell, LA w/o a fuel stop.

I had a 2014 fx4 with 3.5 and had zero issues with it. Traded it in last year with 190k miles on it and got 2021 fx4 3.5 powerboost. I like it so far. I don’t pull heavy shite and my truck runs about 6 hrs a day between job sites. Have saved a ton in gas with the powerboost.

Even if the diesel is getting 30mpgs, that is not enough to offset the additional $1.00 a gallon diesel runs over 87 gas, before you even get into the DEF fluid things. I was going to say this exactly. Plus the several thousand dollars extra when you purchase it.
1000 miles….. if a gas burner truck gets 20 mpg avg, it will cost 150 dollars at 3 dollars per gallon. The diesel truck at 30 mpg avg will cost 133 dollars at 4 dollars per gallon.
Def is negligible, it’s like 15 dollars every 7500 miles.
The diesel option is 3,000 more than the 5.3. But i came from a tundra with the 5.7 , and was looking to maintain that towing power. The new tundra with the 6 cylinder was out of the question. So the real option was between the 3.0 and the 6.2, which is more then the 3.0.
Where the 3.0 really shines, is if you tow anything. I hauled a 4 wheeler, 2 full icechests, hunting gear, 300 lbs of corn. And got 35 mpg. Do that with the 5.3 and you would likely be getting 14-15.

BS. Maybe going 50mph down a hill.

5.0 is a good motor.
3.5 eco can be as well. You have to be religious on the oil changes. There is a screen upstream of them on the oil lines that if clogged will wipe a turbo.
Which will likely foul your catalytic converter.
If you do have to change a turbo be sure they change the screen.

I had a 2011 F150 up until last year. Sumbich rattled on a cold start every damn morning. Scared the shite out of me after I first bought it. Never had any issues with it. Traded it in with over 150k miles for a powerboost last year.
I think the dealerships used to have to go out and start them up every morning so they didn’t rattle when somebody came to test drive.
Miss that truck sometimes.

Go find me a 150 mile hill. Sure most of my speed was about 60 mph with a few towns in between and a small stretch of doing 75, and a longer stretch of doing 65.
