I've had two of them. Pretty solid engines for everyday use. Probably not the best choice if you are pulling a gooseneck or otherwise hauling/pulling heavy loads. I consistently avg 20 mph or better if I kept it around 60 mph on the road.

I have this in my Explorer Platinum. Great engine! Gotta watch out for those water pumps, though. They go out, it's a $2k-$3k repair unless you're the type to do it yourself.

I have a ‘21 eco-boost and I get about 24 on the highway; 17 in town. Love the power also.
Had three z-71 chevys over the years before I switched to the f150. No complaints so far. It pulls my small rv (3500 lbs.) just fine.

I have a 2019 F150 XLT LWB Super Crew w/5.0 Coyote - I get 22-23 mpg on the interstate at 70-75-78 mph loaded down with a/c running. No reason to add the complexity and maintenance repair risk of a turbo.

Have you had any starter "heat soak" issues with that 5.0 when traveling? It's notorious bec of where they placed the starter in that engine setup. All over Ford forums.

No - I have just over 34k miles on the truck and ~20k of those are interstate miles and have had no starter heat soak issues.

I will add one other reason I like the 5.0 vs. eco-boost that doesn't show up on a technical spec sheet - it's an American V-8 and when you stick your foot in it, the exhaust produces a very satisfying growl above 3500 rpm.

We have a 2013 FX-4 SuperCrew 5.5' bed with the 5.0 that we bought in 2016.

I wish I could get even 20mpg on the highway. I do have the 3.55 gearing.

We also have the 36gal tank. I love that.

Other downside is that the payload capacity isn't real high due to the options on it.

My wife's expedition max has this engine and it will flat out run! The only problem is that ford has had many issues with the 10 speed transmission attached to it.

This is true. I have a 2017 f150 with the 3.5 eco-boost and 10 speed transmission. Ford FINALLY figured out the computer codes to make the transmission shift correctly (most of the time-it dose get confused when the engine is cold). I love it. 92k miles and no major problems. It gets 21-23 mpg on the highway doing 75. When towing a 31 foot travel trailer it gets 8.5 mpg, but has plenty of power to tow it (especially in the mountains thanks to the turbo).

I used to want a turbo diesel truck and the straight 6 duramax appeals to me (because it’s straight six). But they’ve managed to add a bunch of emissions shite to diesels that make it not worth the effort.

There is DEF fluid on the smaller diesels. The small Duramax is actually really good. It’s a GM-Isuzu design that was originally intended for cab over trucks. So packaging it for a full sized truck was a headache. It’s ultimately a good product though, and far quieter than diesels of even the recent past under most circumstances (you can still hear the diesel clatter at idle and startup though).

30+ MPG in the pickups or a Suburban with the 3.0L diesel is entirely possible when not towing.

Where the 3.0 really shines, is if you tow anything. I hauled a 4 wheeler, 2 full icechests, hunting gear, 300 lbs of corn. And got 35 mpg.

No you didn't.

Our3.5 gets about 17 mpg. False advertised piece of shite, I’d rather have the oil leaking GM 4.8 Tahoe we replaced with the FORD.

Your speed averaged 52.96mph, and I bet the downhill part is right too

I also very much do not believe you legitimately got 35+ mpg wile towing something regardless of a picture.

I’ve had the F150 3.5 and currently GMC 5.3. Both will get 19 to 20 mpg if you stay off it and drive mostly highway 55 to 60mph

If your heavy on the gas or 80+ on the interstate, probably more in the 16 to 17 range

Using it for grocery getter and kid hauler, good to go.

Using it to tow/haul as trucks were intended for. Get a 5.0, turbos will go out.

I'm dealing with that right now. I have 120k on a 2018 and I had to change the starter 2 months ago. It was $300 for a remanufactured from O'Reilleys and now it's starting to do it again. The only plus side is it's pretty easy to change and O'Reilleys has a lifetime warranty but damn I hope I just got a dud and the next one lasts more than 2 months.

Agreed. The F150's require Max Trailer tow package and Heavy-Duty payload package which includes the 3.73 axle ratio in order to achieve maximum rated tow/haul specs.

5.0L V8 is the best option.

Your only real potential issue besides turbos, if you don't keep the oil changed, are the cam phasers.

They discontinued that package for 2024. If that's what you want...better get it now.

For just the 3.5 or for the 5.0 to? So you can't get the 3:73s going forward?
