It’s just nice to get the commute time back… it’s pretty awesome to get done at 5:00pm and immediately start dinner or walk the dog or take the kids to the park. That hour back is great.

quote:Kids, both HS and college are given multiple days, even weeks advance notice when assignments are due. The teacher/professor's give them a deadline by 11:59 cutoff time to make students aware that if assignments aren't submitted by the cutoff, they get a zero for the assignment. If a student dicks around til the last minute, it's on the student, not the teacher.
One thing I’ve found that does irk me is some high school teachers and college professors have used this technology of availability to push things on students that we didn’t have to deal with when I was in school. Didn’t have to turn in some assignment online by 11:59pm. Certainly not in high school. So I feel bad for kids who end up with teachers and professors who make it tough for them to unplug and just handle after school hours shite the way we did.
Teachers have made it exponentially easier for students, by giving them fair warning and ample time to complete assignments.

I have worked from home before it was cool. I work more at home. I am only by 5:30-6 each morning, till 4pm or so, and then if I get an email that I feel I need to respond to, I run to my office and respond.
It probably is worse because I have customers in all 50 states, so I cover all time zones.

I’ve been WFH full time since 2018 and off and on between 2000-2012. My current job is an hourly paid plus commission sales position where I am not permitted overtime. So I’m done after 8 hours daily and I don’t fret about what I haven’t gotten to each day.

I've found that the people in my office want to work from home moreso because of the freedom that it gives you to sort of do whatever you want rather than them "being more productive" at home. I work for the State, and June 30 is the last day of WFH per the governor. Starting July 1 everybody has to be back in the office full time. And people here are freaking the frick out about it. It's so weird to me that they are so bent out of shape because they have to come back to work.
People keep saying this but we all know that an unproductive employee will find a way to slack no matter where they work. If those people aren’t dealt with, that’s a management problem, not a WFH problem.
My company recently made everyone go back in 3 days per week. Our territory covers 4 states and my teammates are spread out across all 4 states. So now we’re forced to be a warm body at a desk just to be on teams calls all day. It’s absolutely pointless and 100% about control and the commercial real estate business.

If you're working from your house and have a cell phone, you're always available.
I have an app on my phone for my work number, no calls or text come through the app after working hours or on weekends. So that problem can be solved for calls.
I personally love working from home and will never return to an office if I can avoid it. I also worked remote prior to Covid, so my last two jobs I was hired as a remote worker and never even had an office in the same state. Never even met my boss at this job.

We’re not just working longer hours—we’re working in a constant state of interruption.
I go into Do Not Disturb mode in teams whenever I need to hyper-focus on solving a problem. Otherwise Microsoft sounds like a slot machine all day long. If something urgent comes up, my superiors and my trusted colleagues have my cell phone number. Because I don't use the company phone option, I am not required to make my cell phone public in the directory. Therefore the only work calls I get are truly emergencies. It's worth not having a subsidized phone. Your corporate policies may vary.

Yeah…the nature of what I do, subsidized or not, my cell has to be available.

I am back three days a week, as well. Management decided to essentially lie to us about the reasoning instead of just being honest about it being using the real estate they have.
Not only is two days vs three days a pretty damn big difference but it doesn't help when the rationale is convoluted and doesn't hold up whatsoever under scrutiny.

Been fully remote for the last 10 years and I usually work by my pool or office most days. Got a nice monitor set up there. I work about 9-10 hours a day but honestly I rather do that than work 9 hours and spend 2 hours in traffic like the average American. I get to walk my 2 dogs 3x a day, I do a Barrys class and take a 30min to 1 hour nap every day.
Must suck going to the refinery and offshore everyday to almost die to make your coin.

Talking to people like this isn’t very inclusive

Same, but not to the whole damn company. I would have benchods blowing me up constantly. Only a select few have my cell.

I work mostly remote and try to handle emails and other stuff when lever they come up. I also may be found out on a walk at 2:00 in the afternoon on a nice day. The flexibility goes both ways and I like it
This. I’m more likely to answer a phone call at 7pm if I was tidying up my shop for 30 mins at 2pm. But I also consider myself a good employee. I’m in the field doing trainings 50% of the time and when I’m not in the field I’m either entering data from when I was or on meetings preparing for when I go back out. My entire team is this way. Corporate ordered everyone back to the office in Feb. but since we’re remote we were given an exception. Being in an office would do me no good because most of the managers I deal with are located at other HQ’s around the state anyways. I start anywhere from 5am-8am and end between 4pm-7pm. It’s all about the give and take.
My wife is hybrid. She’s a horrible WFH employee. I can’t tell you how many complete seasons of different shows she’s watched in between her afternoon naps. It honestly blows my mind. I would have fired her a long time ago.

I agree with this.
I start my day at 4am every day in front of my computer for an hour working. I then workout, shower, have breakfast, but I'm back by 7-7:30. Sometimes I walk away at 4, but usually come back at 6-7pm for an hour to wrap the day up.
I am firm I won't do anything on weekends though so at least I have that going for me, but my work day is a bunch of hours between 4am and 8pm. Substantially more than if I were in an office 8-5.

I’m in sales. I have a home office I designed and love, but we don’t have anything remotely close to a company office locally.
My wife works from home (No schedule, can do her work whenever she pleases) and watches the 1.5 year old. I can’t get shite done between the two of them. Most days I prefer finding a random chair or sitting in my truck at the account I’m covering for the day to get any actual real work done. Even on slow days, when I could stay home all day, I’ll just go pop in on accounts to get out of the house.
ETA - my days start at 6am and can end anywhere from 10am to 12pm depending on the day. I’ll answer emails any time any place. That doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is that no one seems to have boundaries with cell phones anymore. Nothing drives me more insane than a coworker calling me at 10pm, thinking it’s an emergency, only to answer and get asked about something we spoke about earlier in day in person, over text, or in an email. It’s insanity to me.

Imagine the increase in productivity, in output, over the last 50 years. No more strict 8-5, just constant communication and coordination. Ask yourself, with the tremendous strides in productivity, both mechanically and human, why haven't prices dropped dramatically?
Why didn't prices fall? Who gained from our advancements? Where did the money go?

This is my plan for the 4th of July week at the cottage, I am keeping the laptop off. Helps that the reception is absolute arse and the internet is flaky.
