We also lived on Frey St. early 70s and me and my brothers would hit the canal all the way to Howell Park for the day.
Played in/on the plane, retrieved lost golf balls and sold them back to the golfers for a nickel. They loved us.
Ended the day going to Vincent's Grocery buying bubble gum and a soda before heading home.
Good times for sure!

I'd agree with you that crime is down from last year. It's a phenomenon going on across the country.
We are comparing decades here though. It's extremely high when you compare it to 25+ years ago.
I can't recall a murder in our neighborhood, but they aren't all in NBR, and can recall a number of them very close to our neighborhood.

Understand, I virtually never went to NBR. I couldn't tell you where Plank Rd is. I'm not even certain I've ever been on it.
Robbery and similar crimes generally stayed in the ghetto. I spent almost all my time south of Florida and seldom even thought about it. Even at LSU in the late '80s it wasn't an overwhelming concern, though I never lived near campus.
Today, crime is everywhere. I know a guy who lives in a nice area of BR who was carjacked in his driveway a few years ago.

Back in the mid seventies I used to ride my bike from LSU to north Baton Rouge to visit my friends. No way in hell I would do that now

I ain’t scared going into the hood. Have had rent houses and worked a good bit in NBR. But when I was at the gas station you just see certain elements that make you alert. I don’t like bums coming up to me. They distract me from watching for someone that has bad intentions. Lots of shitty cars, tinted windows and shady people. Just made me uneasy.

It seems most of the murders south of Florida are some sort of domestic violence if it's white on white crime.
