freedom can be defined in various ways. my kids aren't a prison. They are a blessing.

but, you are not me, and we all have a path we choose that we see as right for us.

neither side should be antagonistic. you do you.

In a week, both of my kids are going to be out of the house and it's bittersweet. Great to see them both gaining independence but sad they are not around.

There are certainly times when it is great to be away for the kids and the parents. However, my kids have given my life so much joy and purpose that I would be lost without them. To each his own.

He’ll likely be in much better shape, because he had time to take care of himself. He will also probably be in much better financial shape as he had time to advance his career without the hindrance of a child.

I don’t know if I’ll ever want kids, but there’s nothing wrong with people who choose to never have them.

See that's called being responsible. Enlightened?

WTF? Who knows if they will be a good parent or not?

Maybe you should have never driven a car, because how would one know, right? Or apply for a job, scary, right? Or be a gun owner, same principle? How about alcohol or recreational drugs, never know, right?

I know that at some point youre going to become a worthless old arse to society, and going to expect society to feed and house your lonesome, broke arse. But that's not how all this works. You put the goddamn work into being a good parent, and then you reap the benefits of that effort, when the circle of life revolves around to your turn needing assistance. Just like you did at your job, or learning to drive, or owning a gun. By being responsible. Enlightened?

I’d give up all of those “freedoms” you just expressed and put up with the hassles a 1000x over for the joy my kids bring to me. You really do not know what you are missing, but that’s a good thing. I am glad you do not have kids, too. You would be doing them a huge disservice if you are that selfish.

Not a knock on you being selfish at all, actually commending you for not pretending. Many people have kids and hate it. At least you know you are not cut out to be a parent and are responsible enough to not have them.

You're right. Everyone should have unlimited children that they have no desire to take care of.

Good idea.

I am enlightened.

The funny thing is he may be wise beyond his years. Not everyone is wired for kids and it's sad that some have and they probably shouldn't have. Some are happy with kids, some are not. Some are happy without kids and some are not happy without kids.

I'm old and have no kids and no regrets.

i mean, i get that, but not thinking you'd be a good one doesn't mean you wouldn't be a good one.

a bad parent, to me at least, is someone who knows what their responsibilities are and who they are to and ignoring them. it's not about the vacations, it's not about the toys that you buy them. if you own up to your responsibilities, then you would at least be a mediocre to decent parent, and not horrible like you think you'd be.

hell i'd like to think i take care of what i need to take care of, and i don't think i'm a good parent yet. i still think i can do better.

Yeah, in hindsight I'm glad I had my kid in my 20s.

The best part was that I told my wife that we should wait a year or two before we had kids and she agreed. She found out she was pregnant like 2 days after that conversation

I see it differently. I knew who I was a long time ago. Giving of time and effort for children wasn't something I was interested in.

By knowing that, I say I would have not been a good parent IMO.

I'm a great uncle. You know why? I'm great with them for a couple of hours, a couple of days, a week. More than that and my selfishness wins.

NOT Sorry for knowing myself.
