Although I don't remember ever going to one (though I'm sure I did when I was very little) my Dad used to be a manager in a chain of membership department stores called G-E-X. They transferred him all over the south, from Huntsville, to Atlanta, to Beaumont until he finally got tired of moving all over and moved back to New Orleans.
Anyone older remember these places? This one, as it turns out, was the one in Atlanta. I'd never seen a photo of it until I just searched for this just now, so he'd have run this store when I was 1 1/2 back in 1971-72 or so.
They're all long gone now.

granddad used to take me to buy bicycle tires and lawmower parts and they also sold tools & go-karts.
Baton Rouge also had one like that, that sold all of that, plus firearms. It was called Western Auto.

For the life of me, I can’t remember the name. There were 2 different names, but the old record/movie stores they used to have in every mall in America.
Ah, one was Sam Goody.
ETA: Camelot! That’s the other.

Lots of good memories, plenty of stuff from my childhood.
Would add- Woolco- they fit into Woolworth technically, but was more like a K-Mart/Walmart, whereas Woolworth's was more clothes.
Don't forget New Generation- that was the big "cool store" in the early 80's. As I remember, one on Florida, one next to campus (LSU). Music and electronics, and I think the stylish clothes too.
There was a toy store on Plank Rd near Robert E Lee Theater, called Little Folks, in the 70's. Fantastic selection of toys.

Blockbuster.
Loved their movie pass. I watched probably 100 movies the summer I had that.

Hastings was regional, but insanely better than Blockbuster.
music, books, comic books, coffee shop, etc.
it was a combination of Sam Goody, Blockbuster, Starbucks, and Barnes & Noble. along with a comic books shop with weird manga and anime crap. towards the end, they really leaned into that stuff unfortunately.
Blockbuster barely made a dent in their business and lasted 6-7 years after our Blockbuster closed their doors.

GEX store location on David Dr. & Vets (Magnolia Shopping Center). GEX went OOB in 1973, and KMart moved in ... I remember shopping at GEX with my parents who had a membership card

I miss Hastings. I could go in there and for 50 cents get a cup of coffee and sit in a corner and read a magazine in quiet.

On Carrollton Ave the n New Orleans, Security Sporting Goods. As a kid, that store was like Christmas morning every day.

This!!! Nothing has ever come close since then. It was like walking into the equipment rooms of every major sport, and less like walking into a sporting goods store. It was just everything you needed and stuff you had no idea you needed but now had to have.

Circuit City
IIRC their staff made commissions on sales, so most of them knew their products well and were quite helpful. I preferred giving them my business over Best Buy.
For those of you who grew up in the Midwest, you might remember Venture stores. Their toy and game aisles were impressively loaded for a discount store, so my parents hated taking me in there. They went to shite in a flash when they tried expanding their market to Texas.
The last one I went into in the late 90s looked like something out of the Eastern Bloc. There was even a puddle of vomit in the once great toy aisle.
