I miss Hastings. I could go in there and for 50 cents get a cup of coffee and sit in a corner and ready a magazine in quiet.

or if you're a teenager, try and sneak peaks at the nudey magazines that were tucked in a corner.

not proud.

but it was a great selection of everything. for a while they rented out CDs till they figured out people could make copies of them in the pre-napster days.

Wilson's was much better before they were bought out by Service Merchandise. It went to shite after that.

While not a store, I still miss the hell out of the dollar theater.

Was about to say Wilson's. Seems like they were based in BR.

And I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sears.

Miss Western Auto.

I actually worked at Service Merchandise.

You can still shop Montgomery Ward online.

Blockbuster.

Loved their movie pass. I watched probably 100 movies the summer I had that.

Yes. Loved going in and grabbing the new release on a Friday for the weekend. And a couple random old school movies too. Good times.

We had a very local chain here called Bacons (department store) that I miss. Reminds you of a Macys but more local products.

G-E-X had the best record department of any store in the 70's.

Montgomery Ward. One of the few places (at that time) mom could get jeans she could patch later and dad could get a set of wrenches and some weed eater line. Good times. Would hide in the middle of the clothes displays knowing a whipping would await me in the car.

I'll never forget going to TG&Y in the afternoon of the first day of school. Jam packed with Moms and their kids and their school supply lists. There were only 2 or 3 in my class that got their school supplies from an office supply store (i.e., really wealthy family).

I also remember how stores would periodically close for a day or 2 to do their inventory checks.

I remember my grandparents and parents always promising to go to the "Toy Store" in Monroe if I was good all day and patient while they shopped.
Can't remember the name of it now for the life of me. I just remember they had Breyer horses that I collected.

as a kid growing up in the 70's, new shoes were purchased from Buster Brown's

they also had a bicycle-go-round ride in the store
