PBY Catalina. Granddad built them at the Consolidated Vultee plant near where UNO lakefront Arena is now. This one Is painted to represent the black cats which they would go out at night lumbering along at a 100 knots or so in attack Japanese convoys using radar..the japs were scared to death of them.

Fun fact: The closest 130 in that picture is the same one that had the mid-air with the F-35 a few months ago.

For a time it was the Glamorous Glennis. Think I had a toy version of it.

Then because of Executive Decision.

Favorite now is the SR-71.

But I also loved the Tomcat because of the TV show JAG that I grew up with.

The English Electric Canberra was a beautiful first-generation jet bomber.

the WB-57F version of the Canberra is still flying, NASA has 3 of them. One of which was brought back into service from the boneyard after being stored for 40 years!!!

My father in law was navigator on a Lancaster bomber that was hit twice and he was hit by shrapnel once.
He made it back both times and lived beyond the war years, so it's my favorite aircraft.

Lots of good ones in this thread, but for me the Red Baron's Fokker triplane will always be the coolest historic aircraft. You had to have balls of steel to volunteer to be a WWI fighter pilot. The planes were unreliable in even the best circumstances, much less combat, and even slight damage could lead to certain death.

Imagine how intimidating it was for Allied fighter pilots to see this bright red beauty flying toward them, knowing that inside its cockpit, the best fighter pilot on Earth at the time was coming to shoot them down. The Red Baron was so confident in his fighting abilities (and rightfully so) he wanted to attract attention from the best enemy fighters and fight them 1v1. The Australian soldiers that shot him down from the ground respected him so much, they buried him with full military honors, even as an enemy that killed countless Allied pilots in combat.

And now his image sponsors great frozen pizza. Thanks, Red Baron.

Did you know he only got 18 or 19 kills in the triplane Fokker Dr.1? Most of his kills were in various models of Albatros fighters (also painted red) and a few in a Halberstadt. He also pushed for the development of the Fokker D.VII, arguably one of the best fighters of WW1, but he died before getting a chance to fly it.
